About The Position

The Recreation Specialist, Aquatics is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing all aquatic recreational programs and pool operations throughout the Town, ensuring safe, effective, and engaging programming for children, families, and the community.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Physical Education, Recreation or related field with three (3) years of related work experience;
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • First Aid/ CPR, AED and Darkness To Light certifications/training are required within six months of employment. (was 1 year)
  • SC Pool Operator Certification required (must possess or obtain within one year of hire);
  • Knowledge of the benefits of physical education and wellness programs;
  • Knowledge of management principles and municipal budgeting;
  • Knowledge of aquatic skills and abilities.
  • Skill in the use of computers;
  • Skill in providing effective customer service;
  • Skill in coordinating various programs and projects simultaneously;
  • Skill in oral and written communication;
  • Ability to maintain lifeguarding readiness, including strong swimming skills and competence in rescue techniques and patron surveillance.
  • Ability to recruit, train and supervise subordinate personnel effectively;
  • Ability to work with groups of people of all ages.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in planning, implementing, supervising and evaluating all aquatic activities and implements new program ideas to improve program areas and meet needs of the community.
  • Recruits personnel to staff aquatic facilities; trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates lifeguards in lifesaving techniques, relations with the public, and general housekeeping procedures.
  • Confers with the facility manager in planning maintenance, repairs and other facility upgrades.
  • Directs and assists pool lifeguards in the preparation, maintenance and operation of the pool and locker rooms.
  • Serves as backup lifeguard during scheduled shifts and as needed, including patron surveillance, water rescues, and administering first aid and CPR in accordance with established emergency action plans.
  • Responds to aquatic emergencies, coordinates rescue and first aid until EMS arrives, and ensures appropriate incident documentation.
  • Assists with teaching swim lessons and aquatic programs when needed, including supporting instructors, providing in‑water demonstrations, and ensuring participant safety.
  • Assists in developing goals and objectives for the aquatics program.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with the aquatic staff, community and other agencies.
  • Adheres to and enforces staff compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Enforces all regulations pertaining to safe and healthful pool operations including accident prevention and administration of first aid; assists the facility manager in maintaining SCDES inspection reports and checks pool chemicals and operation daily.
  • Checks safety and first aid equipment and regulations weekly.
  • Checks, recommends, purchases, and stores pool supplies.
  • Maintains pool usage chart and pool operations reports; compiles weekly, monthly and seasonal aquatics reports.
  • Plans and attends meetings, training sessions and seminars.
  • Performs other related assigned duties.
