About The Position

The Department of Parks Recreation and Community Facilities is seeking a highly qualified and energetic candidate to fill the position of Recreation Program Instructor, Senior in the Recreation Division. The position will report to the Recreation Center Supervisor who oversees daily operations of the community center. Duties include supporting customer service operations; planning, coordinating, and implementing recreational, social, and special event programs; maintaining program and facility reports; and ensuring the effective delivery of services and activities to center participants and the community. The position will work collaboratively with staff, community partners, and other stakeholders to support sufficient facility operations and the successful implementation of programs and services.

Requirements

Associate's Degree in parks and recreation or business administration
Two years of paraprofessional recreation program experience.
An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
Some assignments may require background verification, a valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
Basic office equipment such as computers, printers, and phone
Computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe systems, and RecTrac (or other recreation management software systems)
Principles and practices of recreation and leisure programming
Objectives and principles of public recreation
Demonstrating good customer service with individuals from various demographics, backgrounds and ages
Building relationships with parents, athletes, citizens, community groups, and volunteers
Supervising temporary staff and volunteers

Responsibilities

Planning, implementing, leading, and evaluating various recreational, athletic, leisure, and social programs, activities, and events.
Enforcing safety rules, standards, and procedures.
Resolving disputes and providing guidance and support to program and center participants.
Consulting with parents, coaches, teachers, volunteers, participants, and community members on program implementation and evaluation.
Helping to maintain a clean and safe area within the facility and on the external grounds.
Preparing room setups, playing fields, etc. for programs and activities.
Assisting with communication and advertisement of programs and events to the community.
Providing participant transportation to and from scheduled events in city vehicles.
Organizing and participating in meetings.
Assisting in the recruitment, training, scheduling, and supervision of temporary staff and volunteers.
General clerical and administrative tasks
Providing excellent internal and external customer service
Other duties as assigned.
