About The Position

The Villages Community Development Districts (The District) is seeking a full-time Recreation Leader to join their Recreation & Parks team. This position requires strong customer service skills, organizational abilities, and a passion for excellence. Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in Recreation & Parks Management, Leisure Studies or related field or six months to one-year related experience and/or training in lieu of education.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
  • CPR/AED Training must be completed within six months of hire.
  • Successful background screening.
  • Proven intermediate or better proficiency in personal computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel (formulas), Outlook, recordkeeping, routine database activity, graphics, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Well organized and able to successfully multi-task in a fast-paced environment to meet multiple demanding deadlines.
  • Ability to frequently throughout the course of daily duties successfully lift and/or carry such items as chairs (approximately 18 pounds), tables (approximately 50 pounds), sports equipment, furniture, etc.
  • Ability to supervise and direct the selection, training, development, and appraisal of personnel.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence to managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute, rate, ratio, and percentage, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to provide optimal customer service.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, after hours, and a willingness to work and/or substitute at various locations.
  • Ability to work independently and to successfully open and close a recreation center, which may include working with limited natural light sources depending on time of day/year.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, push/pull, use hands/fingers, reach forward and overhead, kneel, stoop, twist, squat, sit, balance.
  • Required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the successful day-to-day operations of a regional recreation center and providing optimal guest/resident relations.
  • Managing all operations including part-time staff training and development at the assigned regional recreation complex.
  • Providing technical and physical assistance, such as supporting staff in setting up and breaking down meeting rooms, providing technical support for A/V equipment, meeting with customers to produce electronic room diagrams, producing reports, and covering unexpected absences.
  • Overseeing programming at the assigned center in differing capacities, including coordinating events with Media, Maintenance, Entertainment, and Special Events departments.
  • Planning and implementing indoor and outdoor recreational activities.
  • Educating staff and residents on department programs and policies.
  • Providing a friendly, welcoming atmosphere that encourages resident and guest participation in recreation activities and promotes a safe, hospitable recreation environment.
  • Ensuring conformance of Recreation Department and District policies at Recreation centers by following required protocols and procedures.
  • Assisting in supervising activity or recreation staff and volunteers, including work schedules, time off, and vacations.
  • Performing routine administrative duties, including monitoring budget and program recordkeeping.
  • Designing and preparing computerized room layouts for scheduled events and club meetings and interacting with event representatives.
  • Implementing Resident Lifestyle and Special Events policies.
  • Handling conflicts and complaints to resolve issues with residents and staff.
  • Interacting and communicating with various volunteer groups and staff daily.
  • Building rapport with club/event contacts to ensure policy updates are practiced consistently.
  • Instructing individuals and/or groups verbally and through demonstrations in lessons, and rules and regulations of sport activities.
  • Maintaining continuous training for all Recreation Assistants on the use and maintenance of equipment and required forms.
  • Conducting room inspections prior to and after meetings to ensure safe working conditions.
  • Maintaining knowledge of all recreation centers' clubs, leagues, and recreation activities, and being present and accessible to ensure optimal customer service.
  • Being at work ready to start promptly at the scheduled shift beginning and completing assigned shifts as an active team member.
  • Abiding by the department dress code at all times.
  • Staying current with District and Department policies and changes/updates.
  • Answering telephone calls by identifying self and facility and providing information about the recreation facility and social events.
  • Performing other special assignments and tasks as required.
  • Traveling to other Recreation locations at the department’s request due to business needs.
  • Working after hours and weekends to ensure optimal customer satisfaction.
  • Coordinating with the Entertainment Department and catering for event setups.
  • Planning, implementing, and evaluating recreational programs within budget.
  • Planning and scheduling resident activities (leagues, lessons, socials, Senior Games, and Lifestyle Events, etc.).
  • Coordinating events with The Villages media (WVLG, Daily Sun and VNN), volunteers, and resident lifestyle volunteer groups.
  • Registering residents and guests in Recreation software for lifestyle events/socials.
  • Interacting and coordinating cooperatively with maintenance, Special Events, and Entertainment departments, Media, The Enrichment Academy, volunteers, and resident lifestyle volunteer groups on planned events.
  • Assisting with issuing Guest IDs, trail fees, and registering residents/guests in Recreation software for lifestyle events/socials.
  • Following required ID protocol for residents and/or guests by checking and recording all resident IDs and guest passes upon their entrance to pool and at scheduled events.
  • Following District incident reporting protocols for all incidents related to self, residents and/or guests.
  • Assisting the RFM/RAM in reviewing timesheets to verify Recreation Assistants’ work hours.
  • Assisting RFM/RAM with assigned paperwork including verification of non-compliance, timely submission of walk-through forms, 90-minute pool checks, and activity counts.
  • Maintaining recordkeeping, either manual or via computer, as directed and within designated timeframes.
  • Performing monthly maintenance checks on facilities as assigned.
  • Maintaining inventory and ordering equipment and supplies on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.
  • Promptly providing all requested forms to the appropriate party on time.
  • Inventorying all Recreation center’s supplies for both administrative and recreational activities and advising RFM or RAM of replenishment needs.
  • Following cash handling procedures for collecting monies.
  • Assisting in training new Recreation Assistants in all phases of their job descriptions.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • Potentially performing additional duties in an emergency.
  • Cultivating and maintaining effective working relations within the department, the District, and outside the organization.

  • Monitoring AC/heating temperatures for consistent comfort of residents, guests, and staff.
  • Monitoring vehicle maintenance for RFM/RAM, including fluids, fuel, tire condition, regular oil changes, windshield wipers, etc.
  • Responsible for monitoring inventory, routine maintenance, and safety inspections of recreation facilities and equipment.
  • Being proficient in the use of all recreation equipment.
  • Maintaining continuing training for all Recreation Assistants on use of equipment, required forms, and maintenance of equipment.
