About The Position

An eligibility list will be established from this recruitment to fill current and future vacancies. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply. Applicants will be considered for multiple hiring locations and may be assigned or deployed to any of these sites in accordance with departmental operational needs. Note: This is an entry-level, part-time Recreation Leader position. It is a limited-service role without benefits, working up to 28 hours per week and not to exceed 1,456 hours in any fiscal year. Job Summary: Under general supervision, assists in planning, organizing and conducting recreation activities for adults and children; performs related support services; and completes other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent is preferred but not required.
  • One (1) year of college coursework in behavioral sciences, social services, or a related field OR a verifiable work record of one (1) year experience related to the duties described above, including experience working with the public.
  • Working knowledge of effective oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of both children and adults
  • Working knowledge of general office practices and procedures

  • Ability to lead and engage participants in a variety of recreation activities.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, parents, staff, and the public.

  • Ability to maintain records and complete basic reports.
  • Ability to safely lift, move, and set up equipment as required for program activities.
  • Work assignments in this classification require moderate physical exertion, including the ability to lift, carry, push, pull or climb.
  • This position also requires extensive and repetitive physical activity involving the arms, wrists, and hands, such as writing and using a keyboard.
  • Additionally, the role requires physical abilities necessary to read, write and communicate effectively in a work environment.
  • A valid California Class C driver's License with a satisfactory driving record is preferred but not required.
  • Possession of First Aid and CPR certification is required within the first six (6) months of employment.
  • Certification must be issued by the American Red Cross or another Community Services Department–approved accredited provider, in First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events, as required by program needs.

Responsibilities

  • Leads recreation activities and encourages participants engagement in areas such as arts and crafts, sports, and special events.
  • Sets up facilities, equipment and materials for recreation activities and special events.
  • Collects fees, and issues receipts.
  • Interacts professionally with parents, participants, the public, and staff.
  • Performs duties in support of the Community Services Department as assigned including but not limited to city-wide events, day care, youth and adult sports, teen programs, recreation classes, aquatics, facility management, senior citizen programs, and related services.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Ensures compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Assists with minor maintenance of program facilities.
  • Maintains attendance records and other related program documentation.
