Under general supervision, the Recreation Leader oversees activities for a specific recreation services program or functional area supporting community, recreational, or park facilities. The role leads, teaches, and conducts recreation activities at various facilities; performs general office duties; requisitions materials and equipment; and carries out related work. This journey-level position independently performs program support duties, exercises judgment and initiative, and receives general supervision from assigned management and supervisory personnel. It has no direct staff supervision, although the employee may provide work-task information and demonstrations to new employees in similar positions. The position supports recreation programs and community events, oversees and schedules play activities for children and adults, responds to patrons, and helps maintain facilities and equipment. Work may take place at parks, schools, the recreation center, and other City facilities. The role may require a varied schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Employees may work in the field and are occasionally exposed to loud noise, temperature extremes, vibration, confined spaces, chemicals, and mechanical or electrical hazards. Employees may also encounter blood and body fluids when providing first aid or CPR and must wear attire appropriate to assigned recreation activities. A typical qualification is completion of the twelfth grade, or a work permit if currently in high school. The minimum age is 16. One year of recreation-program experience is desirable. An American Red Cross First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate must be obtained within 30 days of employment and maintained throughout employment.
