About The Position

The City of Alexandria is seeking a qualified candidate for the Recreation Coordinator position within the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities (RPCA). This role involves professional administrative, supervisory, and programmatic work focused on planning, implementing, and evaluating recreation programs, events, and facility operations. The coordinator will be responsible for developing and overseeing revenue-generating programs, managing contractors, supervising staff, handling facility operations, and engaging with the community. The goal is to enhance community participation and provide high-quality, inclusive recreation opportunities aligned with departmental goals and community needs.

Requirements

  • Four-Year College Degree; completion of college-level courses in recreation, physical education, business management or related fields.
  • Experience in community recreation at a level equivalent to a Recreation Supervisor I, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and oversee a diverse portfolio of revenue-generating programs, including classes, camps, and special events.
  • Coordinate both internally delivered and contractor-led programming.
  • Develop schedules, manage registrations, and ensure programs align with community interests and departmental objectives.
  • Establish evaluation measures, track participation and outcomes, and adjust programming to improve effectiveness and engagement.
  • Coordinate and manage approximately 40 contractors and instructors providing citywide programming.
  • Facilitate onboarding, scheduling, and logistics including facility use, registration, and marketing support.
  • Monitor program delivery, evaluate performance, and ensure compliance with contractual agreements, policies, and safety standards.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to address concerns and provide recommendations regarding program continuation or adjustments.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise seasonal and part-time staff, including Recreation Leaders and instructors.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, performance evaluation, and professional development.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment and ensure staff are equipped to deliver high-quality programs and customer service.
  • Oversee daily facility operations including scheduling, rentals, and program use.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for patrons and staff.
  • Coordinate facility logistics such as space setup and equipment usage.
  • Serve as Manager on Duty as needed, addressing operational issues, customer concerns, and emergency situations.
  • Assist with the development and monitoring of program and facility budgets.
  • Track expenditures, generate financial reports, and process transactions including refunds and deposits.
  • Ensure compliance with City financial procedures and support efficient resource allocation.
  • Analyze program performance through data, feedback, and participation trends.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and implement changes to better meet community needs and organizational priorities.
  • Support innovation and expansion of program offerings.
  • Plan and support special events and community initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain community partnerships and collaborations.
  • Conduct marketing and outreach to increase program awareness and participation.
  • Participate in departmental work groups and strategic initiatives.
  • Support risk management and safety compliance efforts.
  • Attend trainings and pursue professional development opportunities.
