About The Position

The City of Edgewater is seeking polite and professional part-time Recreation Assistant – Facilities substitutes to support front desk operations at the Fitness Center. This is a substitute (on-call) position that provides coverage for planned and unplanned staff absences. Hours are not guaranteed and will vary based on operational needs, including evenings, weekends, and short-notice shifts. The Recreation Assistant – Facilities supervises facility functions and performs a variety of routine manual and clerical tasks, including greeting guests, processing program registrations and reservations, handling cash, cleaning, and managing incoming calls. This role also ensures facility rules and safety standards are followed. Substitute employees may work up to 29 hours per week when covering shifts; however, hours will vary and are not guaranteed. Candidates must have flexible schedules and be available to accept shifts on short notice to support facility coverage needs. Current Civic Center hours are Monday/Wednesday 6am–9pm, Tuesday/Thursday 6am–8pm, Friday 6am–7pm, and Saturday and Sunday 8am–3pm. This position is currently structured as a substitute role, with any future changes dependent on operational needs.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates a high level of guest service and helps create an environment where guest service is a priority.
  • Ability to learn and gain practiced knowledge of Civic Plus Recreation Software.
  • Ability to learn and use Paylocity (HR and Payroll provider.)
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the United States of America.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.
  • Basic verbal and written English language skills and grammar to reasonably communicate information with the public and/or complete relevant written documentation required by job activities.
  • Excellent communication, customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to independently perform multiple functions at once and the ability to handle the public in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain First Aid, CPR and AED Certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the operation of a personal computer along with basic Microsoft Office Suite 365.
  • Use of telephone, calculator, and photocopier.
  • Outstanding customer service and interpersonal communication skills, to maintain effective working relationships with citizens, elected officials, appointing authorities, department heads, appointed boards, employees, and volunteers.
  • Effective audio-visual skills and perception needed for making observations, reading, writing, and communicating with others.
  • Ability to lift and carry items such as office supplies and equipment, up to 50 pounds, on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to participate in and respond to routine conversation in person or via telephone, and distinguish telephone, printers, computers, and other auditory tones.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as the initial contact to greet and welcome guests of the Edgewater Civic Center.
  • Answers inquiries related to recreation, police, library, and City services, and directs guests appropriately.
  • Assists with processing of incoming and outgoing phone calls.
  • Receives and processes monetary transactions for rental reservations, membership/program purchases, daily check-ins, and other payments.
  • Provides correct change, documentation of payment and reconciles the cash drawer to receipt reports.
  • Follows established guidelines concerning facility operations such as use policies, code of conduct, emergency procedures, guest supervision and revenue receipt.
  • Handles a wide range of patron interactions with professionalism, empathy, and sound judgment, including navigating occasional high-stress situations while maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for all.
  • Addresses guest complaints and filter them to the appropriate administrative staff member.
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with Specialists and Recreation Coordinator - Facilities.
  • Performs light facility maintenance, routine cleaning and daily deep cleaning tasks.
  • Performs facility setup/tear down for classes, programs, and meetings as needed.
  • Performs at minimum hourly facility checks and informs supervisors of maintenance or guest issues.
  • Supervises patrons and ensures safe use of facilities. Maintains security of facility. Reports on vandalism and theft.
  • Maintains a positive attitude, takes initiative, and works as a cohesive team with all staff members to ensure efficiency and camaraderie.
  • Responds to accidents or incidents according to procedures. Effectively handles emergency situations involving fire alarms, CPR and First Aid.
  • Upholds City and Department policies and procedures as well as applicable laws.
  • Attends mandatory Parks and Recreation meetings, participates in City meetings and ongoing training opportunities.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance with the ability to follow call-out procedure.
  • Any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Recreation Coordinator - Facilities.
