About The Position

The Recovery Support Specialist provides direct support to students enrolled in a Recovery High School program, promoting academic success, emotional wellness, and sustained recovery from substance use. This role works collaboratively with the Recovery High School Therapist, school personnel, families, and community partners to ensure a holistic, trauma-informed approach to student success. As a Recovery Support Specialist, you will use your lived experience (when applicable) to support and mentor students navigating both recovery and academic challenges. You'll serve as a positive role model while helping students build essential life skills, develop recovery plans, and strengthen support systems.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Must obtain Certified Peer Support (CPS) and Missouri Recovery Support Specialist (MRSS) credentials
  • Must self-identify as being in recovery from a co-occurring and/or substance use disorder to effectively model and support clients
  • Must demonstrate stability in recovery, with a minimum of two (2) years in sustained recovery
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Valid driver's license issued by state of residence (Missouri or Illinois); Missouri residents must hold a Class E license (or equivalent for state of residence)
  • Proof of current auto insurance and acceptable driving record per agency policy

Responsibilities

  • Share lived experience with substance use and/or co-occurring disorders to inspire and guide students (when applicable)
  • Promote recovery as a lifestyle and serve as a positive role model
  • Provide individual and group support to students
  • Assist students in developing and maintaining personalized recovery plans, including identifying triggers and setting goals
  • Teach skills such as stress management, emotional regulation, communication, and self-advocacy
  • Support students in building healthy support systems and connecting with peer/self-help groups
  • Encourage development of self-care and coping strategies
  • Collaborate with clinical and school staff to support student success
  • Participate in team meetings and treatment planning discussions
  • Represent the student perspective in team and planning meetings
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with agency, DMH, CARF, and other regulatory standards
  • Transport students as needed using an agency or personal vehicle
