About The Position

The CDC Foundation is working with CDC and state and local authorities to provide field surge staff to support surveillance, prevention and response activities within the Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) program. The CDC Foundation seeks candidates for a Recovery Coach. The Recovery Coach will utilize their lived experience with substance use disorders or co-occurring disorders to assist individuals in linkage to care and needed services. The Recovery Coach will be responsible for performing community outreach for Community Based Overdose Prevention initiatives and assisting in linking people to needed services. This is an on-site position with flexible hours (8am-7pm, Monday-Friday). Potential nights and weekends may occur.

Requirements

  • Has a valid Peer Recovery Specialist certification through the Maryland Addiction and Behavioral Health Professionals Certification Board (MABPCB), or the ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of employment. The Baltimore County Department of Health will assist with the certification process.
  • Has a valid driver’s license and car insurance for travel in their own vehicle.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of current and continuous recovery from a substance use disorder.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Knowledge of substance use disorders, treatment options and Community Based Overdose Prevention principles.
  • Experience working with and advocating for individuals with substance use disorders and/or mental health conditions
  • Highly motivated with the ability to work well in teams and independently.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Knowledge of community resources preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with clients in Baltimore County who have been identified as having a high risk of relapse, at intake or prior discharge to provide support to their individual recovery plans
  • Utilizing your recovery expertise, professional training and lived experience, support individuals' engagement in treatment and commitment to recovery
  • Help to initiate and sustain an individual/family in their recovery from substance use and/or addiction. Provide support and guidance; in person or via telephone
  • Meet with identified clients onsite or in the community, and serve as a personal guide and mentor for those clients through their early recovery
  • Receive referrals from local hospitals and EMS providers for individuals who have experienced a non-fatal overdose and are identified as high-risk and in need of additional recovery support services during inpatient care.
  • Assist in facilitating client engagement during transitions between levels of care.
  • Provides feedback to clients on the recovery progress. Identifies areas to the client which have presented or may present roadblocks to continued abstinence
  • Demonstrates the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and professional interactions with all Baltimore County Department of Health staff, partners, and administrative personnel.
  • Performs community outreach to connect people with Community Based Overdose Prevention supplies and services.
  • Assist clients with linkages to care and needed services.
  • If position requires local travel, employees must pass pre-hire and annual motor records check and carry minimum auto liability coverage.
