About The Position

FWI is supporting the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) Office of Administration as the agency settles into its new home in the U.S. Department of Transportation Headquarters West Building. The move uncovered a large volume of government records, and every one of them needs to be identified, evaluated, and handled the right way. This role involves inventorying accumulated files, applying records schedules, appraising what needs to be kept, carrying out secure destruction of temporary records, and preparing permanent records for transfer to the National Archives. The work has real compliance stakes, a clear finish line, and a team that values doing it right. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in information management, library science, history, or a related field
  • 5–10 years of experience in federal records management
  • Strong working knowledge of NARA regulations, the Federal Records Act, the General Records Schedules, and agency-specific records schedules
  • Experience conducting records inventories, scheduling, appraisal, and disposition
  • Experience preparing records for transfer to NARA or a Federal Records Center
  • Understanding of PII handling and secure destruction practices
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail, with the ability to manage large volumes of material methodically
  • Clear written communication and comfort working onsite with a government client

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Records Manager (ICRM) or completion of NARA records management training
  • Experience with DOT records programs or DOT Order 1351.28
  • Experience with NARA's Electronic Records Archives (ERA) system
  • Experience supporting an agency office move or records cleanup project

Responsibilities

  • Systematically inventory FTA records identified during the office relocation, both physical and digital
  • Perform records scheduling and appraisal to determine retention and disposition requirements
  • Carry out authorized disposition actions, including secure destruction of temporary records
  • Prepare permanent records for transfer to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)
  • Ensure all work complies with NARA regulations, the Federal Records Act, and DOT Order 1351.28
  • Identify and protect records containing personally identifiable information (PII) or other sensitive information
  • Maintain clear documentation of every disposition decision, including schedule citations and destruction records
  • Help FTA reduce its physical and digital storage footprint and lower privacy and security risk
  • Support the McManus historical collection effort as needed
