About The Position

As a Real Estate Underwriter, you'll evaluate mortgage loan applications, assess borrower qualifications, and make critical credit decisions that support both our members and our organization. You'll work closely with processors, loan officers, and operations teams to help deliver a seamless lending experience while maintaining compliance with investor and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of three years of FNMA mortgage processing experience
  • Strong understanding of residential mortgage lending guidelines and documentation
  • Experience analyzing income, assets, credit, and collateral
  • Excellent analytical, decision-making, verbal, and written communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Previous mortgage underwriting experience
  • Knowledge of FNMA, FHLMC, portfolio, and investor guidelines
  • Familiarity with ATR/QM requirements, TRID, Fair Lending regulations, and CFPB requirements

Responsibilities

  • Analyze borrower income, assets, credit profiles, tax returns, financial statements, and rental income to determine loan eligibility.
  • Evaluate mortgage applications using FNMA, FHLMC, and industry underwriting standards and guidelines.
  • Review Automated Underwriting System findings, including Desktop Underwriter (DU) and Loan Product Advisor (LPA), to support sound credit decisions.
  • Assess appraisals, title reports, condominium documentation, and property-related risks to ensure adequate collateral and marketability.
  • Identify and resolve title deficiencies, lien issues, subordinations, solar agreements, and other property concerns.
  • Review private mortgage insurance (PMI) eligibility and coverage requirements.
  • Approve or decline mortgage loans within delegated underwriting authority and established lending guidelines.
  • Evaluate loan default risk and ensure compliance with Ability-to-Repay (ATR), Qualified Mortgage (QM), and other regulatory requirements.
  • Accurately document underwriting decisions, calculations, and conditions within loan files.
  • Partner with loan officers, processors, and branch teams to resolve issues, provide guidance, and facilitate timely loan decisions.
  • Stay current on investor guidelines, CFPB regulations, and secondary market requirements, including FNMA and FHLMC updates.
  • Participate in training, industry seminars, and professional development opportunities to maintain underwriting expertise.
