About The Position

Kaufman & Canoles is seeking a full-time Real Estate/Litigation Paralegal for its Virginia Beach location. This role involves a wide range of responsibilities supporting attorneys in both real estate and litigation matters. The paralegal will be responsible for drafting legal documents, analyzing real estate-related materials, conducting research, managing case files (both physical and electronic), preparing for trials, and maintaining accurate records of communications and billable hours. A key aspect of the role includes managing deadlines, discovery processes, and ensuring compliance with court procedures. The position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines. Professional communication with clients and court personnel is essential.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel, as well as Adobe and Nuance.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent grammar and writing skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Three or more years of experience in civil litigation or real estate is preferred.
  • Associate degree or paralegal certificate is preferred.
  • Experience with federal court filings and systems, including PACER and ECF, and state court filings and systems, including VJEFS and OCRA, is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil and Appellate Procedure and the Supreme Court of Virginia Rules of Civil Procedure is also preferred.
  • Background reviewing surveys, deeds, and other land instruments is desirable.
  • Experience with title curative litigation is beneficial.
  • Proficiency with case management software is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Drafting and preparing pleadings (complaint, answers, motions, and discovery) and other legal documents.
  • Analyzing loan files, title reports, plats and surveys, and other real estate related documents.
  • Tracing heirs and other genealogical investigations.
  • Researching into party identity and location and asset searches.
  • Organizing and managing case files and organizing files electronically.
  • Creating trial notebooks.
  • Drafting deposition summaries.
  • Organizing and reviewing discovery documents for responsiveness and privilege.
  • Obtaining process service and assisting with the issuance of summons and writs.
  • Editing and formatting briefs and memoranda.
  • Managing docket of deadlines and case priorities.
  • Managing document storage, production, and handling electronic discovery processes.
  • Professional communications with clients and court personnel (daily basis).
  • Attending weekly meetings as needed and updating attorneys and clients on status of active cases.
  • Filing and recording documents with the courts.
  • Keeping accurate records of all communication (i.e., phone calls, emails, secure messages), expenses, case documents (such as client intake sheets, pleadings, etc.).
  • Maintaining detailed and accurate daily billable hour records.
