About The Position

The Urban Planning internship will focus on developing contacts in local municipalities to update zoning information contained in the Long Island Zoning Atlas. The Urban Planning/Policy intern will collect and analyze zoning data and land use public hearing information from local municipalities, review recent and upcoming housing related legislation at the federal, state and local levels, and shadow CDLI’s real estate team including property management and development support for our portfolio of over 1,200 affordable rental units across Long Island. The internship will run for 10 weeks over the summer and requires a commitment of 15 – 20 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Rising junior or senior in an undergrad program with an interest in pursuing a career in Urban Planning/Policy.
  • Commitment to the mission, vision, and goals of CDLI.
  • Strong communication skills both written and oral.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with ability to work independently and remotely as needed.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Flexibility and desire to work on varying planning projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Specific interest/knowledge of affordable housing is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assists staff in collecting and preparing data for various planning projects.
  • Conducts fieldwork, collects parcel data, and searches land records.
  • Prepares maps and planning reports of limited complexity.
  • Review and analyze current federal, state, and local policies relating to housing as assigned.
  • Presents report findings to stakeholders.
  • Conducts basic office functions as needed, such as data entry, file management, and customer service.
