About The Position

The reading tutor, student employee (Federal Work Study) is responsible for executing and engaging in literacy activities designed for preschool and/or elementary age children. The tutor assists students in reading comprehension through a variety of activities as assigned by K-12 teachers. This position is available to undergraduate students that have been packaged with Federal Work Study (FWS) through Student Financial Services (SFS).

Requirements

  • Good academic and financial standing with the University
  • Current enrollment in classes at Lindenwood University
  • Packaged with FWS funding through SFS
  • Satisfactory background screening required prior to being matched with an organization
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a proven ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, and educators
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Thorough understanding of multiple effective methods of instruction
  • Thorough understanding and knowledge of relevant subjects
  • Ability to encourage, build confidence, and positively reinforce by providing constructive feedback to students
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong reading and comprehension skills
  • Ability to engage and interact with children of all ages
  • Time management skills

Responsibilities

  • Provides reading tutoring for individuals and/or groups
  • Performs literacy activities and/or projects as directed
  • Scores assessments to fully understand student achievement levels, areas for improvement, learning styles, and other academic tendencies
  • Responds to student needs in a courteous and appropriate manner
  • Exhibits patience and maintains a positive attitude
  • Assists teachers in identifying academic needs and developing tutoring plans
  • Adheres to outlined schedules
  • Follows through on directives and adheres to deadlines
  • Provides input on successful reading strategies
  • Teaches and models studying, note-taking, and test-taking skills and strategies with students
  • Supports the mission of the University and serves as an ambassador of the Q2 culture of service excellence
  • Models, supports, and holds others accountable to the University’s values
