About The Position

This position supports the Atlantic Test Range (ATR) Range Safety Office in Patuxent River, Maryland, providing range safety planning, hazard analysis, documentation, and real-time operational test support. The role applies Operational Risk Management principles to mitigate range safety risks and minimize residual risk to personnel, property, and critical infrastructure, with risk formally accepted at the appropriate leadership level. The engineer develops and maintains range safety policies, guidance, engineering documents, and hazard control procedures for Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation activities. The role reviews test plans and technical documentation for hazards and compliance with NAVAIR safety instructions, and conducts technical analyses such as hazard mitigation, Probabilistic Risk Assessments, and Flight Safety System evaluations for unmanned, ballistic, and Directed Energy systems. The engineer may qualify and serve as a Mission Range Safety Officer, act as the primary safety representative for programs at ATR, and provide real-time safety support during test missions, including testing and operating flight safety containment systems. The role also consults with project offices and managers on system feasibility, resource allocation, safety system adaptability, and ways to mitigate safety-related delays and costs while maintaining safety compliance. Most work takes place in enclosed buildings at a desk or in data processing environments. Work includes sitting, standing, walking, lifting, and reaching; close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus are required. Some travel and/or overtime may be required. Employment and start date are contingent upon the candidate receiving the required US DoD-issued interim security clearance.
