About The Position

A Range Master is a licensed peace officer certified by the T.C.O.L.E standards. An extensive background in firearms and maintenance of firearms is essential to this position, along with the ability to maintain a firearms range with upkeep and basic construction. Operation of mechanical equipment, i.e., tractors, mowers, trailers, etc., will be necessary from time to time. The Range Master must possess skills of communication and organization.

Requirements

  • A Basic Peace Officer License and 5 years of certified firearms instructor training.
  • Local, State, and federal guidelines applicable to areas assigned.
  • Sheriff Firearms, ammunition, and safety standards.
  • Firearms inspection and repair.
  • Range Target System.
  • Computer applications.
  • Interpersonal skills with other local, state, and federal agencies.
  • A Basic Peace Officer certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (T.C.O.L.E).
  • Licensed T.C.O.L.E. Instructor and Firearms Instructor certificates.

Nice To Haves

  • Glock and AR-15 Armorer Certification with 3 years of experience as an armorer is recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Provides firearms qualification for staff members and others as may be assigned.
  • Provides personal instruction to include remedial instruction.
  • Develop lesson plans and training sessions for firearms and less lethal weapons.
  • Operates, demonstrates, and fires a variety of weapons to include tasers, shotguns, handguns, and rifles.
  • Incorporates new and advanced training aids into existing programs as appropriate.
  • Reviews departmental policies, procedures, laws, codes, and like items relating to the use of force and recommends changes as needed.
  • Conducts annual inspections of department-issued weapons, including shotguns, rifles, and authorized off-duty weapons.
  • Provides maintenance and repairs to department – issued and authorized weapons, armory, and range equipment.
  • Ability to operate and coordinate maintenance for the farm implements, such as tractors, mowers, etc., in the daily maintenance of the shooting range property.
  • Works closely with Local Police Department Range Master and/ or Grounds Keeper to ensure compliance with shooting range protocol and coordinates shooting schedules with various law enforcement entities.
  • Orders range supplies within budget guidelines and maintain inventory control for the same.
  • Use computer and applicable software to update and maintain records for staff qualifications and weapons maintenance.
  • Prepares and disseminates correspondence, memos, and schedules regarding qualification, weapons maintenance, and other information as necessary.
  • Remains current with new methods of range training and armory operations.
  • Assists in delivering confiscated, surrendered, and other types of weapons and ammunition to destruction sites in coordination with the Property Room Deputy.
  • Observes the destruction of weapons and ammunition and maintains records regarding the same.
  • Delivers and retrieves weapons for repair.
  • Lifts and carries boxes of ammunition and other items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Is a member of the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office Firearms Review Board.
  • Maintains training records for all Jail and Peace Officer Certifications.
  • Any duties as directed by the Sheriff of Lubbock County.
