About The Position

The Range Control Officer (RCO) serves as the central safety contact for real-time air and ground users of the Fallon Range Training Complex (FRTC), based at Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada. As the NAWDC Range Office (N58) operational and safety representative, the RCO enforces applicable range manuals, procedures, plans, and work instructions, and promptly reports safety or security violations to the Range Office. The position requires sound judgment and technical expertise to resolve complex scheduling and deconfliction issues without compromising personnel or property safety. The RCO monitors and deconflicts live-fire and non-live-fire air and ground training in the FRTC bombing ranges while maintaining restricted-airspace integrity. The role coordinates with military units, agencies, Air Traffic Control, and scheduled users; manages real-time range access and scheduling; maintains watch logs and usage records; and supports emergency response. The RCO also monitors range activity using radar, communications, and surveillance video, issues warnings and evacuations when unsafe conditions arise, verifies authorized ordnance and safety prerequisites, and prepares formal incident reports. The incumbent works an assigned watch station at the Range Operations Center, with watch assignments aligned to the center’s operating hours as established by the Range User’s Manual or higher authority. The RCO serves as a subject matter expert and instructor for newly hired personnel and conducts recurring training. The work environment is a typical office setting, with routine travel to remote site facilities potentially involved.
