About The Position

A well-established, family-run cattle operation near Hyannis, Nebraska is hiring for a lead Ranch Hand position to manage their own place. This is a cow/calf operation running 800 head, with work covering haying, feeding, calving, and general herd health. This is a highly independent role best suited for someone who takes pride in their work, can manage responsibilities without supervision, and values being part of a long-term operation. A husband and wife team would be a great fit for this role. This is a true lead position on your own place, not just another hand on a crew. The home is a newer 3 bedroom, 2 bath house, and the operation offers long-term stability with a family that has been in the business for generations.

Requirements

  • Prior ranch experience required
  • Strong understanding of cattle health with the ability to identify issues early
  • Ability to work independently and manage daily responsibilities without supervision
  • Experience feeding cattle and operating basic ranch equipment
  • Comfortable calving out cattle independently
  • Ability to operate truck and trailer, clean driving record preferred
  • Basic equipment maintenance skills
  • Honest, dependable, and accountable
  • Strong work ethic with attention to detail
  • Willingness to work within a multi-generation family operation

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for daily care of cattle
  • Feed cattle using a pickup and welker caker and a bale processor
  • Maintain feeding schedules and ensure consistency in cattle performance
  • Monitor and manage cattle health
  • Assist with preg checking and general herd work
  • Assist with sorting, shipping, and preparing cattle for sale
  • Manage cattle during calving season
  • Brand cattle, rope and drag brandings
  • Perform fence building, repair, and general ranch maintenance
  • Maintain and operate equipment including feeding equipment, tractors, and hay equipment
  • Assist with hay production including mowing, raking, baling, and moving bales
  • Check and maintain windmills, water systems, mineral, and salt
  • Monitor pasture conditions and overall livestock performance
  • Identify and complete tasks without being told, taking initiative in daily work
