About The Position

The Railyard Ramp Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the intermodal ramp and railyard to ensure the safe, efficient, and timely movement of containers, trailers, and rail equipment. This role provides direct leadership to terminal operators, equipment operators, hostlers, and other yard personnel while ensuring compliance with company policies, customer requirements, and all applicable safety regulations. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced transportation or logistics environment and has a strong commitment to operational excellence, employee development, and customer service.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience in transportation, logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, or rail operations.
  • Strong leadership and employee coaching skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and operational management systems.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Frequently walk long distances across uneven terrain within the railyard.
  • Climb ladders and equipment safely.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to stand, bend, reach, and walk for extended periods.
  • Must be able to safely work around heavy equipment, moving vehicles, trains, and elevated noise levels.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background verification, physical and drug screening

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in intermodal, railroad, port, or terminal operations.
  • Knowledge of rail safety regulations and intermodal operations.
  • Experience supervising union workforces.
  • Experience using Terminal Operating Systems (TOS) or yard management software.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of railyard and ramp employees.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with company safety policies, OSHA regulations, FRA requirements, and customer operating procedures.
  • Monitor train arrivals, departures, loading, unloading, and container movements to maximize operational efficiency.
  • Assign work priorities and labor resources to meet production goals and service commitments.
  • Conduct daily shift briefings, safety meetings, and operational updates.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop employees through performance feedback and ongoing training.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, implementing corrective actions when necessary.
  • Monitor equipment utilization and coordinate maintenance needs to minimize downtime.
  • Partner with terminal leadership to improve productivity, reduce operating costs, and enhance service quality.
  • Ensure accurate documentation, operational reporting, and data entry into company operating systems.
  • Coordinate with railroad personnel, customers, trucking partners, and internal departments to resolve operational issues.
  • Maintain staffing levels, approve timekeeping, and assist with scheduling based on operational demands.
  • Promote a positive work environment focused on teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
