About The Position

Reporting to the Foreman, an Raker is responsible for redistributing asphalt mix as it leaves the screed, ensuring proper placement and preparation for rolling. As an integral member of the paving crew, the Raker performs tasks such as raking asphalt, shoveling excess material, sweeping debris, and other labor-related duties to support the paving operation. This role is headquartered in Lethbridge and Ft. McMurray, and involves travel between both operational locations, accepting applicants from across Alberta. The company will provide and cover travel and accommodation costs for work-related travel outside the designated geographic area.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3+years of experience working on a paving crew
  • Minimum of 2+years of experience in asphalt raking on a paving crew
  • Demonstrate a proficient understanding of asphalt and raking techniques
  • Knowledge of paving construction methods, asphalt and road construction materials, heavy equipment operation and industry requirements
  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a Driver’s Abstract showing no more than 6 demerits and no major infractions

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Spread asphalt with a rake using efficient techniques while maintaining a steady and consistent pace
  • Use an asphalt rake to redistribute mix leaving the screed in preparation for rolling, ensuring proper compaction
  • Blend and level seams in the asphalt mat using a rake to minimize visible marks and create a smooth surface
  • Shovel excess asphalt, sweep up debris, and maintain a clean and organized worksite
  • Ensure proper match points and limits of asphalt mix adjacent to concrete structures, manholes, water valves, and other road fixtures
  • Measure road width using measuring tape and string line the boundaries to guide the paver accurately
  • Collaborate with the Screed Operator to ensure even distribution of asphalt over the road surface
  • Shovel asphalt into areas inaccessible to paving machines and compact it with rakes and hand tampers
  • Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment and movement of materials during paving operations
  • Perform various labor tasks, including operating power and hand tools, and occasionally operate equipment such as pneumatic hammers, vibrators, and skid steers when required
  • Assist & train all new employees in all aspects of Paving
