About The Position

The Railway Labourer maintains and repairs railway tracks. Duties can include replacing and repairing various track components including rails, railway ties, and fences and adjusting the alignment and the surface of the track as well as responding to emergencies and track outages. This position requires travel throughout Western Canada from 5-21 days at a time depending on the shift. The work environment extends across vast landscapes—majestic mountains, dense forests, and serene lakes. Regular out-of-town assignments mean you’ll wake up to new horizons. This role is physically demanding, involving climbing, bending, and lifting, and requires working in various weather conditions, rain or shine.

Requirements

  • Ability and willingness to travel to remote work locations as needed
  • Prepared to work all shifts
  • Ability to support yourself until your first paycheck arrives
  • Willingness to share a hotel room
  • Valid (non-GDL) Class 5 Driver’s License or Class G license at minimum
  • Clean driver’s abstract
  • Willingness to invest in 8-inch metatarsal work boots
  • Pass criminal record check
  • Pass drug screening
  • Pass fitness screening, including lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Pass all required eRail badge training and testing

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair railway tracks
  • Replace and repair various track components including rails, railway ties, and fences
  • Adjust the alignment and the surface of the track
  • Respond to emergencies and track outages
  • Pull track spikes
  • Apply rail anchors
  • Shovel crushed rock
  • Bend and lift up to 50 lbs on a regular basis
  • Perform repetitive tasks
  • Load and unload various heavy materials such as tools and equipment (spikes, tie plates, joint bars etc.) to and from various vehicles and machines
  • Prepare, use and maintain various common and specialized hand tools for assigned work
  • Correct deviations in track surface, alignment and gauge
  • Clear railway crossings of brush and tall grass using handheld tools and equipment
  • Remove tie plates from the rail
  • Perform snow removal
  • Occasionally drive a company vehicle
