About The Position

RailPros is seeking a Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) to ensure on-site roadway worker protection for activities conducted on or near live railroad tracks. This role requires precise job site coordination, clear dispatcher/train communication, and consistent application of On-Track Safety procedures. The position involves extensive travel throughout multiple states (Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia) and requires candidates to be willing and able to travel frequently, including overnight stays. Candidates must be adaptable to changing work environments and schedules while maintaining a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence.

Requirements

• Ability to meet required physical demands and complete necessary tasks.
• Ability to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains.
• Understanding of On-Track Safety training and qualifications required for protected roadway workers.
• Proficiency in radio communication procedures between RWIC/EICs (Employees in Charge) and assigned work group.
• Capability to conduct job briefings with all roadway workers at their location.
• Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
• Skill in installing railroad derails and applying locking devices.
• Proficiency with electronic communications, including email and text, and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
• Former NS RWIC Qualifications: 20 years of experience with the last position held as a supervisor track inspection (STI), assistant track supervisor (ATS), Foreman, or higher, OR 20 years of experience as a RWIC.
• Non-Former NS RWIC Required Education and Experience: 20 years of service as an RWIC while employed by a Class I or Class II freight railroad.
• Employment is contingent upon the successful outcome of pre-employment and recurring background checks, and drug and alcohol testing, as well as classroom and field training, including assessments.
• Successful completion of all onboarding and recurring training requirements is mandatory for continued employment.

Responsibilities

• Ensure accurate and error-free jobsite protection for each assignment, including radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, and granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits.
• Conduct daily job briefings with all personnel on-site, ensuring compliance with railroad safety requirements.
• Prepare and submit required electronic forms, including job set-up forms for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other necessary reports.
• Handle and place signs, derail, and other tools and equipment weighing between 15 to 90 pounds as needed throughout the day.
• Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training.
• Maintain high levels of communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
• Perform other tasks as assigned to meet business needs.
