About The Position

Road & Rail Services is seeking an experienced Railcar Repair Technician for our Superior Township operation. This skilled-trade position focuses on inspecting railcars, identifying repair needs, and completing approved welding and mechanical work so equipment can safely return to service. This opportunity may be a strong fit for someone with experience in railcar repair, welding, metal fabrication, industrial maintenance, diesel mechanics, trailer repair, or heavy-equipment service. Previous railroad experience is beneficial, but qualified candidates with related trade experience are encouraged to apply. You will work primarily outdoors and regularly use welding machines, cutting equipment, grinders, hand tools, and other industrial repair equipment.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in at least one of the following areas: Welding or metal fabrication, Industrial or mechanical maintenance, Diesel, trailer, or heavy-equipment repair, Railcar inspection or repair, Another comparable skilled mechanical trade
  • Stick-welding experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience performing welds in the 4G or 5G positions is also highly valued
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions
  • Ability to recognize mechanical or structural concerns
  • Ability to complete dependable work without sacrificing safety or quality
  • Ability to work outside in heat, cold, rain, wind, and other changing weather conditions
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, reach, and move throughout the shift
  • Ability to safely handle industrial tools and repair equipment
  • Ability to work around noise, moving equipment, and active rail operations
  • Maintain reliable and consistent attendance
  • Properly wear all required personal protective equipment

Nice To Haves

  • Previous railroad experience is beneficial

Responsibilities

  • Examine railcars for damage, deterioration, structural fatigue, and mechanical concerns
  • Determine whether required repairs fall within the operation's authorized scope
  • Complete approved work according to customer requirements and applicable AAR specifications
  • Perform stick welding, metal cutting, grinding, fabrication, lubrication, and mechanical repairs
  • Use pipe wrenches, pry bars, ratchets, chipping tools, and related equipment
  • Record inspection findings and completed repairs accurately
  • Escalate repairs that cannot be performed at the facility
  • Operate assigned company equipment, which may include tractors, utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and vans
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and orderly condition
  • Follow all company, customer, and industry safety procedures
