About The Position

This position, under the direction of the appropriate physician, is responsible for performing a variety of radiographic procedures using independent judgement. This position is responsible for ensuring high quality radiographic services while maintaining efficient quality control and performance improvement programs as well as compliance with government regulations.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school in a radiologic technologist program required.
• Current, valid American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) registration required.
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, or technical procedures.
• Ability to write reports and general correspondence.
• Ability to respond to questions form groups of managers, patients, or employees.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills as well as interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge of CMS regulations, Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and Department of Health Protection.
• Knowledge of Medicare and other insurance reimbursement requirements.

Nice To Haves

• Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation certification preferred at time of hire, required within 6 months of hire date.
• Six months to one year related experience and/or training preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform general radiography procedures daily. Check physician orders, identify the patient, assess the patient’s physical and mental status, obtain and document patient history and explain procedure to the patient with every procedure. Provide assistance in transporting patients to and from the department. Charge exam being performed in MediTech. Select patient on work list (be sure it is not a genrad). Perform radiologic procedure utilizing proper technical parameters and obtaining views per established protocols. Document reasoning when unable to acquire established views or when protocols are altered. Scan in previous reports and current physician’s order into PACS. Record indications for exam, any history and tech notes. DiCom images. View images. Move exam to online for radiologist to read. Ensure quality images are obtained. Repeat poor quality radiographs. Pull previous images for physician comparison. Create new order for previous films. Digitize previous films not on PACS. DiCom previous images. View images and mark as read and pending archive to place previous images online. Provide and utilize lead protective devices for self and patient as required and always wear film badge to monitor radiation exposure levels. Record all pertinent procedure information after examination is complete.
• Perform IV contrast studies daily. Screen patient and obtain informed consent for the procedure. Report allergy and asthma history, abnormal laboratory results and medication history to the radiologist prior to the examination. Ensure certain medications are discontinued prior to and following the procedure. Ensure proper premedication of patient and that patient has someone to transport them when indicated. Prepare appropriate equipment and contrast material with each patient. Uses standard precautions and biohazard containers when administering IV contrast and monitors the patient. Report and document reactions for every patient when reactions occur. Provides images to radiologist for completion or additional imaging needs when study is complete. Perform mobile x-ray procedures as necessary.
• Perform fluoroscopy, barium studies, and other special procedures as needed. Prepare equipment, barium mixtures and contrast materials as indicated. Assist the radiologist in instruction and positioning of the patient. Obtain additional images and check examination for completion. Calculate and document radiation dosage received by the patient during the examination. Clean and disinfect the equipment, aprons, tables, sponges, etc. when soiled and restock supplies as needed. Perform mobile x-ray procedures as necessary.
• Perform various clerical duties. Chooses appropriate procedure codes for hospital and radiology billing. Answer telephones, schedule and screen patients and record accurate messages as necessary. Prepare files for release and return of x-ray films, obtain consent for release, mail post cards to retrieve overdue films, duplicate images when they are not interpreted prior to release. Prepare next day schedule folders. Enters scheduling information and copy schedules daily.
• Perform quality control procedures. Perform quality control checks and ensure integrity of drugs on crash cart, defibrillator monitor, and emergency drug boxes daily. Check the operation of emergency response alarm in two locations on a monthly basis. Document and report discrepancies immediately with x-ray’s protective devices. Perform visual and audible exposure Check millamperage, time and kilovoltage peak output. Document and report discrepancies immediately with x-ray’s protective devices.
• Participate in departmental performance improvement program. Perform peer review competency checks for venipuncture and age specifics on an annual basis. Pull appropriate files for radiologist interpretation.
• Train, observe and critique new technologists and document competency. Respond to all emergency code and situations. Adjust care and communication to the age and comprehension level of the patient. Provide patient education materials. Stock room with supplies, stores incoming supplies, notifies supervisor when inventory is low. Report equipment malfunction to supervisor. Shift and purge x-ray files annually. Package and arrange delivery for any images requiring interpretation at another location. Perform other related duties as assigned or required. Follow standard precaution guidelines.
