About The Position

The Radiology Access Specialist is responsible for the accurate and efficient admitting, registering, entering radiology orders and financial analysis activities for all patients upon arrival to the healthcare system, including initiation of activities necessary to comply with managed care contracts and CMS regulations. This position responds professionally and courteously to patient information inquiries, greets patients, and initiates the registration process. The specialist reviews past account balances, notifies patients of financial responsibility, and collects these balances, supporting pre-collections goals. They review accounts with inadequate financial coverage to coordinate with financial counseling and facilitate applications for State Agency or Charity. Comprehensive understanding of healthcare system patient access policy and procedures is required, along with enforcement of established requirements. The role demands empathy, professionalism, excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to interact appropriately with patients of all ages, third-party payers, and other departments. Strong organizational skills, multitasking ability in a fast-paced environment, and a commitment to teamwork are essential. The position involves working in a clinical setting with some stressful situations, requiring personal flexibility, moderate sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and work at portable computers. Excellent computer skills are a must. Essential functions include registering and activating scheduled, walk-in, add-on, and emergency room patients, verifying insurance eligibility and benefits, validating pre-certification, computing and communicating patient liability, collecting financial liabilities, reviewing prior bad debts, alerting Financial Advocates of clearance issues, demonstrating excellent customer service, and accurately entering and scheduling Radiology orders in e-chart.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Nice To Haves

  • 2 years experience in a healthcare related field.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, self-starter with strong math skills who can function efficiently and professionally with all customers, in a demanding environment.
  • Strong computer skills, excellent customer service skills and interpersonal communication and telephone etiquette are required.
  • Demonstrate ability to multitask and manage high volumes.
  • Knowledge of basic registration and third party payer preferred.
  • Preference for work experience in a physician front office or insurance/healthcare call center.
  • Medical terminology, and basic knowledge base of CPT and ICD-10 codes, insurance coding and billing knowledge.
  • Certified Healthcare Access Associate from NAHAM

Responsibilities

  • Perform accurate and efficient patient admitting, registration, and radiology order entry.
  • Conduct financial analysis for patients, including compliance with managed care contracts and CMS regulations, reviewing past balances, notifying patients of financial responsibility, and collecting payments.
  • Coordinate with financial counseling for accounts with inadequate coverage and facilitate applications for State Agency or Charity.
  • Ensure accurate patient demographic and insurance information collection and entry, including validating medical record numbers and obtaining two patient identifiers.
  • Complete all required forms such as ABNs, financial assistance, and consent forms.
  • Clearly communicate patient financial liability and ensure patients comprehend their Patient Rights.
  • Schedule Radiology patients and accurately enter Radiology orders in e-chart.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits using integrated systems, payer websites, and telephone calls.
  • Validate and document pre-certification requirements and status.
  • Calculate, process, and document patient financial liabilities, estimations, and payments.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of insurance and access practices, implementing procedure changes and accessing organizational resources for updates.
  • Achieve a yearly average of 95% accuracy and quality with HIS and patient access technology solutions.
  • Complete assigned special projects and prepare reports.
  • Identify and report equipment maintenance or repair needs.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of departmental and patient information.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, a positive professional demeanor, and effective communication with patients, visitors, physicians, and staff.
  • Resolve interpersonal conflicts and foster positive working relationships.
  • Demonstrate accountability for actions and decisions and offer constructive input to the work unit.
