The Radiologic Technologist provides clinical services according to radiology practice standards to ensure optimal department functions. This role demonstrates skills and knowledge in the use of all x-ray equipment and performance of all x-ray protocols and procedures. The technologist also demonstrates technical proficiency in producing high-quality exams within the appropriate length of time for the procedure. This position involves demonstrating a satisfactory working knowledge of PACS and, if needed, reviewing scans with Radiologists regarding important anatomic detail and areas of abnormalities. A key responsibility is confirming patient identity, body part, and body side for every patient prior to the procedure. The Radiologic Technologist administers sound patient care practices according to department and hospital policies to ensure patient safety, communicates effectively with patients to obtain clinical history and informed consent, and explains procedures to patients and families to ease anxiety and assure cooperation. The role requires the ability to recognize clinical and/or emergent problems that may interfere with exams and take appropriate action, as well as responding and following up on critical test findings. The technologist also acquires and evaluates patient lab values (BUN, CR, pregnancy, glucose) when applicable to ensure they are within normal limits. Maintaining equipment, exam rooms, and work areas in a neat and safe condition is crucial, including daily checks of the suite, equipment, and accessories for hazards, troubleshooting malfunctions, reporting dangerous conditions, and maintaining a clean work area. The role also involves checking stock supply levels, maintaining supplies at par level, and demonstrating effort in supply maintenance and utilization, as well as cleaning and disinfecting equipment and maintaining a supply of linen. Maintaining quality control checks in accordance with policy requirements, participating in department QC and PI programs, and following up on deficiencies are also essential. The technologist must maintain proper sterile technique for procedures, practice aseptic techniques, and always wash hands before and after each patient contact, strictly adhering to the hospital policy on body substance isolation. Wearing a film badge while on duty and following departmental policy for badge results is mandatory. Finally, the role includes completing ancillary tasks to ensure efficient and consistent departmental operations, such as accurately and legibly recording required information on requisitions, performing routine clerical duties, and inputting and verifying all data in PACS/RADIANT.
