The Radiologic Technologist performs a range of general diagnostic radiologic procedures. This role involves performing a variety of major and minor diagnostic radiological procedures ensuring optimal imaging. The technologist ensures the identity of the patient using appropriate patient identifiers per hospital policy, and ensures the correct procedure for diagnostic testing, exactly as outlined in the physician order and per all regulatory requirements and hospital policies/procedures. They assist with the care of the patient within the scope of licensure. The role requires effectively determining patient needs based on age-specific criteria, positioning patients as necessary to ensure accurate testing in consideration of patient age, and coordinating patient requirements during diagnostic procedures and/or transportation to ensure patient safety. Maintaining a sterile environment during invasive procedures and utilizing effective PPE for each patient as necessary is crucial. Applying radiation safety practices such as the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) model, sparing exposure whenever possible and providing adequate shielding, is also a key responsibility. Ensuring Infection Control procedures and HIPPA compliance is mandatory. The technologist must empathize with patients and their support systems, express compassion and understanding for the situation, and demonstrate care appropriate for the patient's age, and cultural, religious, gender identity, or ethnic background. Engaging in caring behaviors, taking conscious ownership for work, and taking deliberate/thoughtful actions regarding interactions with patients, families, physicians, and co-workers is expected. The role also assumes responsibility for ancillary tasks/duties associated with the delivery of procedural care such as documentation of charges, ordering of supplies, conducting environmental safety rounds, and maintaining department records associated with patient care activities. Monitoring patients, diagnostic procedures, and diagnostic equipment, making appropriate adjustments to ensure optimal results, and reporting malfunctions to leadership in a timely manner are also essential functions. Performing procedural due diligence to ensure images are processed and archived, and systems are updated, with accurate information as it relates to the patient's medical record and billing is required.
