About The Position

The Radiographer (Staff Grade) will carry out their duties under the day-to-day supervision of the Radiography Services Manager or their designate. They will participate in an 8 am-8 pm daily rostering system, including an on-call service as required by the hospital's needs. The role involves undertaking all general radiography in a professional manner, adhering to professional guidelines, and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide an integrated, patient-centered service. Key responsibilities include adhering to departmental imaging protocols, ensuring correct patient image identification, implementing policies and procedures for safe professional practice, and managing radiation protection according to the ALARA principle. The Radiographer will also be involved in equipment inspection, quality assurance, reporting equipment faults, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. Flexibility in response to service needs, participation in audits, and maximizing the use of new technology like the Radiology Information System and PACS are also expected. Maintaining patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality, communicating courteously with staff, and taking responsibility for actions are crucial. In education and training, the Radiographer will participate in mandatory training, continuing professional development, performance reviews, and the teaching/training of radiographers, students, and other staff. They will also identify teaching and learning opportunities. In health and safety, the Radiographer must work safely, be aware of risk management, document and report incidents, and care for safety equipment. They must have knowledge of HIQA Standards and comply with HSE protocols, as well as adhere to infection protection and control guidelines. The role also involves supporting and participating in sustainability initiatives. Administratively, the Radiographer will contribute to quality improvement standards, assist with equipment and material organization, participate in service planning and development, represent the department at meetings, engage in IT developments, stay updated on organizational changes, and receive visitors. They will also participate in the practice education of student radiographers and support sustainability initiatives.

Requirements

  • Must be a Radiographer (Staff Grade).
  • Must be able to carry out duties under the day to day supervision of the Radiography Services Manager or his/her designate.
  • Must be able to partake in an 8am-8pm daily rostering system as required including an on call service.
  • Must be able to undertake all general radiography in a professional manner.
  • Must adhere to professional guidelines as determined by the Irish Institute of Radiographers and Radiation Therapists.
  • Must work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Must adhere to all departmental imaging protocols.
  • Must be responsible for the correct identification of patient images.
  • Must implement agreed policies, procedures and safe professional practice by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations and standards relevant to the use of ionising radiation.
  • Must ensure that appropriate radiation protection is used and that the radiation dose is kept to a minimum consistent with the ALARA principle.
  • Must take part in routine inspection of equipment and quality assurance procedures.
  • Must be responsible for the safe use of all imaging equipment and adhering to instructions on its use.
  • Must be responsible for the logging of and reporting of all equipment faults to Radiography Service Manager or his/her designate.
  • Must attend at such other health institutions administered by the HSE as may be designated from time to time.
  • Must be flexible in response to service needs.
  • Must assist and take part in audit and quality assurance programmes.
  • Must maximise the use of new technology including the Radiology Information System and PACS.
  • Must ensure the correct completion of records and reports.
  • Must respect and maintain the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of the service user and in relation to all hospital activities as per statutory requirements.
  • Must relate to and communicate with all other staff in a courteous and helpful manner at all times.
  • Must be accountable – take responsibility for his/her actions, seek advice/a second opinion as required.
  • Must participate in mandatory training programmes.
  • Must participate in continuing professional development including in-service training, attending and presenting at conferences/courses relevant to practice, promoting and contributing to research etc. as agreed with the Radiography Services Manager or designated officer.
  • Must engage in performance review with his/her line manager.
  • Must actively participate in induction/teaching/training/supervision of radiographers, student radiographers and other staff within the department.
  • Must identify teaching/learning/audit/opportunities within the department for themselves/others.
  • Must work in a safe manner with due care and attention to the safety of self and others.
  • Must implement agreed policies, procedures and safe professional practice by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations and standards.
  • Must be aware of risk management issues, identify risks and take appropriate action.
  • Must document appropriately and report any near misses, hazards and accidents and bring them to the attention of the relevant person (s).
  • Must be responsible for the cleaning and proper care and storage of all safety equipment including personal protective equipment (e.g. lead aprons, thyroid shields).
  • Must be responsible for keeping the department in general and their work area specifically clean, tidy and safe.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) Standards as they apply to the role for example, Standards for Healthcare, National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections, Hygiene Standards etc and comply with associated HSE protocols for implementing and maintaining these standards as appropriate to the role.
