About The Position

The VA Long Beach Healthcare System is seeking a Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist (or Radiation Therapy Technologist) to join their team. This role involves receiving and interpreting physician prescriptions, preparing and operating complex radiation therapy equipment, ensuring patient safety and comfort, and collaborating with medical physicists and radiation oncologists. The position is located in Long Beach, California, a vibrant waterfront city in Southern California.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved program in Therapeutic Radiologic Technology.
  • Certification through the ARRT in (T) radiation therapy.
  • 1 year of experience in the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment.
  • 1 year of experience in the delivery of prescribed therapeutic radiation for cancer and abnormal cell growth treatments.
  • 1 year of experience in three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D – CRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT).
  • 1 year of experience with the education and expertise necessary to generate radiation dose distribution and dose calculations in collaboration with the medical physicist and radiation oncologist.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and interpret prescriptions/instructions from the treating physician and carry out complex assignments under general supervision.
  • Prepare imaging, simulation, treatment, and ancillary equipment for patient use.
  • Record measurements and perform daily checks of radiation fields to ensure basic specifications are met.
  • Maintain appropriate markings on the patient's skin for exact positioning and provide cushions/shields as appropriate.
  • Explain procedures to patients, secure their confidence and cooperation, and follow ALARA principles.
  • Operate imaging/sealed radiation equipment and limit radiation fields using lead cutouts or multi-leaf collimation (MLC).
  • Assist radiation oncologists with bolus design according to physician's direction.
  • Position patients in the CT scanner and acquire specific data sets prescribed by the physicist or physician.
  • Acquire the necessary tumor volume for treatment planning and provide CTS to the radiation Oncologist for tumor volumes to be outlined.
  • Set technical factors for radiotherapy procedures, and set up and operate accessory equipment.
  • Perform timeout procedures and positively identify each patient before providing treatment.
  • Operate the simulator and take high-quality radiographs to accurately localize tumor volume.
  • Accomplish portal filming and localize topographical landmarks.
  • Instruct accurate contours of the patient's body and perform necessary measurements utilized by the physicist.
