Job Description: Position Summary and Purpose Provide radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by a radiation oncologist according to established practices and standards. Duties may include reviewing prescription and diagnosis; acting as liaison with physician and supportive care personnel; preparing equipment, such as immobilization, treatment, and protection devices; and maintaining records, reports, and files. May assist in dosimetry procedures and tumor localization. The Radiation Therapist operates various highly technical equipment with accuracy and precision. The Radiation Therapist participates in clinical and/or didactic instruction and evaluation of Radiation Therapy students. The Therapist complies with local, state, and federal rules and regulations and the requirements of accrediting bodies. The Therapist provides service to all age patients.

Requirements

Associate Degree from an approved program in Radiologic Technology with completion of approved curriculum in Radiation Therapy. (required)
Minimum of 6 months prior experience as a Radiation Therapist (required)
Must be board certified in Radiation Therapy, or board eligible.
Registered with the American Registry of Radiological Technologists (required)
Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) (required)
Commonwealth of Kentucky Radiation Operator Certificate (required)
Understanding and awareness of policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
Ability to demonstrate and apply this knowledge in performance of administrative support tasks.
Ability to explain and interpret information to clients/customers and staff.
Ability to present ideas clearly and effectively in written form; ability to edit, adjusting language or terminology to meet needs of the audience or as appropriate; ability to use correct grammar, organization and structure.
Ability to identify and understand issues, problems and opportunities; determines course of action; develops appropriate solutions.
Demonstrated computer management skills.
Considerable knowledge of computer applications such as Aria/Cerner.

Responsibilities

Position patients for treatment with accuracy, according to prescription.
Administer prescribed doses of radiation to specific body parts, using radiation therapy equipment according to established practices and standards.
Follow principles of radiation protection for patient, self, and others.
Review prescription, diagnosis, patient chart, and identification.
Conduct most treatment sessions independently, in accordance with the long-term treatment plan and under the general direction of the patient's physician.
Enter data into computer and set controls to operate or adjust equipment or regulate dosage.
Performs daily quality assurance checks on therapy equipment and accurately logs information.
Notifies supervisor of any equipment failures.
Observe and reassure patients during treatment and report unusual reactions to physician or turn equipment off if unexpected adverse reactions occur.
Educate, prepare, and reassure patients and their families by answering questions, providing physical assistance, and reinforcing physicians' advice regarding treatment reactions or post-treatment care.
Maintain records, reports, or files as required, including such information as radiation dosages, equipment settings, or patients' reactions.
Check for side effects, such as skin irritation, nausea, or hair loss to assess patients' reaction to treatment.
Prepare or construct equipment, such as immobilization, treatment, or protection devices.
Help physicians, radiation oncologists, or clinical physicists to prepare physical or technical aspects of radiation treatment plans, using information about patient condition and anatomy.
Photograph treated area of patient and process film.
Act as liaison with physicist and supportive care personnel.
Schedule patients in appropriate time slots to allow ample time for individual procedures.
Provides assistance to other healthcare personnel during dosimetry procedures and tumor localization.
Train or supervise student or subordinate radiotherapy technologists.
Refers patient to lab for testing when physician orders and verifies results prior to continued treatment.
Performs other duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as required to meet the needs of the facility and internal or external customers.
Maintains confidentiality and protects sensitive data at all times.
Maintain compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct.
