The radiation therapy technologist uses ionizing radiation producing equipment to administer therapeutic doses of radiation as prescribed by the physician for treatment of disease. Requirements

  • High school with additional skills training (certification).
  • Two years and one year radiation therapy.
  • Certification required; Type: ARRT (Radiation Technologist).
  • Minimum of six months experience.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, simulates, and delivers the prescribed course of radiation.
  • Checks beam direction devices, protective devices, heavy and dangerous equipment and keeps records of same under supervision of physicist.
  • Performs daily warm up and quality assurance procedures on linear accelerators, reporting and deviation to the physicist.
  • Assist in high dose rate after loading procedures.
  • Schedule treatment appointment times and SIM check in EMR and submit charge tickets.
  • Checks prescription, diagnosis, chart and patient identification.
  • Checks daily treatment time and delivers prescribed dose and maintains daily records.
  • Maintains visual and/or audible communication with the patient during treatment and simulation.
  • Identifies changes in patient’s treatment set up and reports to physician and/or physicist, when Necessary and reports any erratic operation of equipment to physicist.
  • Application of permanent and temporary markings.
  • Observe the clinical progress of the patient undergoing radiation therapy, observe the first signs of any complication and determine when treatments should be withheld until a physician may be consulted.
  • Sets up simulator room for procedure (catheters, dummies, tape, orthogonal box); takes localization films; assists in treatment.
  • Explains procedure to patients, means of communication during treatment and procedure to follow if emergency arises during treatment.
  • Maintains and documents accurately in the radiation therapy records as well as quality measures.
  • Records statistical data, i.e., weekly, monthly stats.
  • Apply the rules and regulations for radiation safety, detect any radiation hazards and provide for appropriate public safety in the event of a radiation accident.
