About The Position

Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking a Radiation Therapist to join their dynamic team at the Shirley & Jim Fielding Northeast Cancer Centre. This centre is a key regional cancer program serving over 600,000 people in Northeastern Ontario, treating over 3,000 new cancer patients annually. The Radiation Therapy team utilizes state-of-the-art technology, including Linear Accelerators and advanced CT simulators, and runs active brachytherapy programs. Requirements

  • Minimum of a three (3) year Bachelor’s Degree in Radiation Therapy, from an accredited university or equivalent.
  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) in the speciality of Radiation Therapy.
  • Current Certificate in Cardiopulmonary CPR is required.
  • Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
  • Current certificate of registration in the specialty of Radiation Therapy with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) is required.
  • Current Certificate in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is required.
  • Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
  • Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA)/Ontario Medical Association’s (OMA) Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols.
  • Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload.
  • Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.

Nice To Haves

  • Current Membership with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) or Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Sciences (OAMRS) is preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in a health care environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safe and accurate delivery of radiation treatment and related services to patients as prescribed by a Radiation Oncologist.
  • Deliver safe and accurate daily radiation treatments to patients by educating, preparing, and positioning for treatment, assessing verification images, and taking necessary corrective action.
  • Consult with Radiation Oncologists (RO) and Medical Physicists regarding treatment plans (e.g. interpreting computer dosimetry data).
  • Develop computerized treatment plans based on prescriptions and dose limits to critical structures.
  • Perform dose calculations based on RO’s prescription and enter into the Record and Verify system.
  • Perform quality assurance of all treatment plans and dose calculations prepared by co-workers, and verify RO prescriptions.
  • Perform routine quality assurance tests on a variety of technical equipment and initiate corrective action as required.
  • Verify patient information and machine parameters by using computer systems.
  • Prepare electronic treatment charts.
  • Perform treatment preparation duties, including Computed Tomography (CT) Simulation and customized accessory fabrication (e.g. moulds, immobilization devices, and other beam modifying devices).
  • Work collaboratively with other health care professionals to ensure quality patient care and continuing professional education.
  • Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  • Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  • Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  • Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  • Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.
