About The Position

Administers ionizing radiation to the patient in accordance with the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist. Collaborates with the medical physicist, dosimetrist and Radiation Oncologist in the preparation and delivery of radiation treatments. Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary oncology team to ensure efficient treatment for patients throughout treatment. Performs services for patients from all age groups.

Requirements

  • Administers ionizing radiation to the patient in accordance with the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist.
  • Collaborates with the medical physicist, dosimetrist and Radiation Oncologist in the preparation and delivery of radiation treatments.
  • Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary oncology team to ensure efficient treatment for patients throughout treatment.
  • Performs services for patients from all age groups.
  • Delivers the prescribed course of radiation therapy, in accordance with the prescription and instruction of the Radiation Oncologist, Physicist, and Dosimetrist.
  • Performs final patient chart check before treatment initiates by confirming presence of accurate prescription, diagnosis, treatment consent, and alignment of treatment parameter in each of the software/information systems.
  • Prepares room and equipment for the patient, according to the prescription regarding immobilization devices, patient specific treatment parameters and other noted apparatus as appropriate.
  • Confirms assurance of correct treatment delivery by performing a pre-treatment timeout ensuring correct patient, correct treatment site, correct treatment dose, and correct pre-treatment imaging for alignment purposes.
  • Documents patient treatment within the specific record and verify system according to departmental expectation.
  • Maintains treatment and simulator supplies, and requests reorder as needed.
  • Participates in the simulation of radiation therapy patients as directed by the lead therapist.
  • Reports erratic or unexpected operation of equipment to the medical physicist and documents the errors within the noted location.
  • Participates in evening/weekend/holiday on-call rotation.
  • Proficient with the daily quality assurance process for each machine and collaborates with the medical physics team as needed to address any quality concerns related to radiation delivery and/or machine functionality.
  • Independently competent on all treatment machines and department technologies.
  • Regularly utilized as a resource to other colleagues.
  • Assuming an informal leader role within the group (ie. CT lead, training/onboarding lead, multi-day coverage for lead therapist as needed).
  • Has the support of the physicians to assume independent decision-making ability within the scope of their licensure.
  • Participates in at least one yearly quality project to present to the therapist team at the discretion of the lead therapist.

  • The proficient radiation therapist is individually capable of performing treatment duties on at least 3 of the 5 radiation machines, participates in night/weekend/holiday on-call shifts, and can perform CT simulations individually, if needed in the event of an on-call emergency or other urgent clinical circumstances.
  • Proficient with the daily quality assurance process for each machine and collaborates with the medical physics team as needed to address any quality concerns related to radiation delivery and/or machine functionality.
  • In addition to all expectations of Level I, the expert radiation therapist is independently competent on all treatment machines and department technologies and is regularly utilized as a resource to other colleagues.
  • This therapist is assuming an informal leader role within the group (ie. CT lead, training/onboarding lead, multi-day coverage for lead therapist as needed) and has the support of the physicians to assume independent decision-making ability within the scope of their licensure.
