About The Position

The Radiation Oncology Nurse Specialist at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital is responsible for the direct and indirect care of patients undergoing radiation therapy. This role involves assessing patient needs, developing and implementing care plans, providing patient and family education on cancer treatments and screenings, coordinating care with other healthcare professionals, and documenting all activities in the electronic medical record. The specialist also participates in community education initiatives to promote cancer awareness and screening, and engages in professional development to stay current with industry innovations. This is a full-time position working 32 hours per week, typically Monday to Friday from 7:45 am to 4:15 pm, with very rare weekend requirements and no holiday work.

Requirements

• Registered Nurse (RN) license
• CPR certification
• BSN degree
• 3-5 years focused experience in clinical areas
• Board Certification by 12/31/2015 or within two years of hire (for hires after Jan 1, 2012)
• Good communication skills
• Ability to access, plan, intervene, and evaluate the physical, emotional, and educational needs of patients
• Knowledge of computer operations and applications
• Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations
• Ability to work with patients in a fast-paced environment with established time constraints
• Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance

Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care of women and men with cancer related health concerns.
• Interview and assess new patients for physicians.
• Assist physicians with clinic visits and procedures as needed.
• Assist patients and staff in the appointment process to expedite timely appointments.
• Provide patients with appropriate education related to prevention, diagnosis, tests, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
• Teach patients about the importance of screenings such as mammograms and colonoscopies.
• Coordinate testing and expedite results reporting.
• Provide emotional support to patients.
• Assure continuity of care by interfacing with day surgery, in-patient units, and out-patient facilities.
• Maintain the QCL for the MD and facilitate patient flow through the continuum of care in partnership with the physician and other members of the health care team.
• Follow-up with physicians on all abnormal testing in a timely fashion and document in the EMR.
• Document all education, assessments, and care given in the EMR.
• Identify and collect appropriate Quality Improvement data.
• Follow-up with patients in a timely and professional manner and document in the EMR.
• Act as a resource for the hospital in promoting cancer awareness, education, and screening tools.
• Act as a resource for patients and other employees.
• Use effective listening and questioning techniques in a professional and empathetic manner, demonstrating sensitivity to patients and families.
• Develop educational tools for patients.
• Identify, develop, and participate in all hospital and community programs related to cancer screening, diagnosis, and cancer related health issues.
• Develop education programs for cancer screenings programs and awareness.
• Participate in AIMMC Cancer Committee activities.
• Work with all hospital departments to provide seamless care for patients recently diagnosed with cancer, under the direction of the Radiation Oncology Coordinator and Cancer Center leadership.
• Teach other hospital departments and employees about cancer education, screening tools, and treatment options.
• Develop educational programs for the public.
• Work with the Wellness Communities of the Chicagoland area to support their efforts.
• Responsible for continued self-growth and education in areas related to changes in cancer detection, education, and treatment options.
• Present a professional image and courteous manner representing AIMMC to the public.
• Participate in unit and hospital activities to promote service excellence.
• Promote team behaviors and act as a role model for others.
