About The Position

Radiation Health is the cornerstone of the Radiological Protection program. It serves as an independent check on the health and performance of the rest of the nuclear enterprise through personnel and area monitoring, and environmental monitoring. Radiation Health is the primary contact with our four customers: workers, sailors, public, and the environment. The Radiological Health Engineer will act as the program lead for multiple radiation health functional areas. The engineer will also maintain a watch bill position in the Radiological Emergency Response Organization and support additional functional areas, as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Engineering
  • Experience in radiological controls
  • Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program Experience
  • Experience with Gamma Spectroscopy
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance through the department of defense
  • Must be able to qualify as a radiation worker as specified by NAVSEA 389-0288.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to deal effectively with people at all levels.
  • Maintain professionalism with all materials
  • Strong time-management skills and the ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple projects at once with attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
  • Flexible team player willing to do what it takes to get the job done
  • Self-starter with the ability to work autonomously and proactively by taking the initiative in assigned work and in learning ways to create efficiencies

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the radiation laboratory in the Shipyard and at the Subase
  • Support of byproduct material compliance
  • Providing oversight of medical records at both the Shipyard and the Subase
  • Authoring dosimetry investigation reports
  • Operate the personnel decontamination facilities in the Shipyard and at the Subase
  • Perform operations for the Area Monitoring and Environmental Monitoring programs
  • Supporting external and internal dosimetry programs
  • Becoming a National Voluntary Laboratory Accredited approved signatory for our dosimetry programs.
  • Participate in evaluations, surveillances, and audits to support and strengthen the oversight of the radiological controls program
