About The Position

The racing steward will monitor and regulate horse racing in accordance with Ohio Revised and Administrative Code, determining all questions with reference to racing arising during the meet and all questions with regard to licensing, entries, barn area conduct and policy, and other matters to the extent to which they are authorized to act under the rules of racing.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have proper accreditation.
  • Must have acted as a racing official, or similar position, for at least 2 years.
  • The ability to maintain all regulatory licenses within assigned state of employment.
  • Must successfully pass background check
  • Must successfully pass an alcohol and drug screening
  • Knowledge of: All horse racing policies and procedures extensively; applicable Ohio Revised Code and Administrative Rules regarding horse racing; Microsoft Office
  • Ability to: Speak publicly; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; prepare clear and concise reports; interpret and explain policies and procedures; interpret and apply federal, state and local policies, laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers superior internal and external guest service the Boyd Gaming Way by ensuring every interaction includes our Six Core Service Standards (Look sharp, smile and greet the guest; Be friendly, polite and use courteous language; Provide especially timely and knowledgeable service and then some; Always find solutions to guests’ problems; Use the guest’s name when appropriate; Thank the guest and invite him or her back.); and work harmoniously with fellow team members.
  • Occupies the Steward’s stand to monitor all Live Races.
  • Confers with State Steward and Associate Steward to investigate race infractions.
  • Confers with Jockeys, Trainers, and Racing Officials during the course of an inquiry or objection.
  • Makes final determination of the official order of finish in a race.
  • Determines consequence for all licensees for policy violations and racing infractions.
  • Regulates the stable area to provide a safe and secure environment for all licensees and equines.
  • Oversees the entry process.
  • Selects horses to be sent to the State Detention barn for post-race blood/urinalysis testing.
  • Determines track conditions.
  • Operates the “Stop Wagering” signal at the start of each race.
  • Confers with Veterinary personnel regarding horses unfit to race.
  • Writes detailed reports and maintain sensitive records that comply with state racing commission policies and procedures.
  • Makes accurate and logical decisions based on interpretations of administrative rules.
  • Identifies irregularities in wagering patterns.
  • Distinguishes colors correctly.
  • Resolves disputes between track management, patrons, owners, trainers, and jockeys.
  • Displays the highest standards of ethical conduct.
  • Exhibits honesty and integrity.
  • Displays highest level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments efficiently.
  • Works with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrates responsible behavior and attention to detail.
  • Responds appropriately to supervision.
