This position reports to: Research Team Manager __ In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead a team of Research and Development (R&D) employees and support them in achieving the agreed R&D targets. Each day, you will coach and develop the team. You will also showcase your expertise by helping in managing technologies, platforms, and Intellectual Property. The work model for the role is: Onsite; Bloomfield, CT #Li-Onsite You will be mainly accountable for: The R&D Prototype Shop Manager will support the Electrification product lines at our site in Bloomfield, CT as part of the Smart Power R&D Team (ELSP). In this role, you will be managing the Prototype shop team consisting of machinists and tool & die makers. Essential to this role are strong team leadership skills and demonstrable experience in design, quality, safety, compliance, and new product development. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • 10 years experience in a manufacturing, R&D, and/or project management environment; experience in leading & managing manufacturing or machine shop teams
  • Ability to plan, manage, and execute projects including material procurement and resource management; project finance knowledge and the ability to effectively manage budgets
  • Candidates must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Mechanical design related to electrical components or equipment; knowledge of certification standards for electrical equipment (UL, IEC, ANSI/IEEE); working experience / knowledge of Bridgeport, lathe, waterjet, wire EDM, press brake, VMC’s, 3D printers, and other typical machine shop equipment
  • Fluent in use of AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Creo, MasterCAM or other 3D CAD design software
  • High level of motivation and resourcefulness working in an open environment; critical thinking ability to find innovative solutions to engineering challenges

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Prototype Shop to deliver fabricated or modified samples, components, assemblies, fixtures, etc. as required by R&D teams; act as the primary liaison between R&D customers and the shop; determine project / job requirements including materials, resources, cost and timing
  • Accurately quote jobs / projects for both time & cost; ensure jobs are completed within stated budget; Provide required financial reporting to R&D Finance
  • Effectively lead and manage Lab team; coach, manage and motivate team members; foster employee development and career opportunities
  • Serves as a technical resource for the team; Drive a culture of innovation and learning; Maintain awareness of technologies, innovations, and customer / market developments; identify creative solutions to difficult problems
