About The Position

ABB is seeking a Senior R&D Engineer to lead development of next-generation medium-voltage switchgear solutions for its Electrification Distribution Solutions business in Mebane, North Carolina. The role transforms engineering challenges into products that improve power-distribution safety, efficiency, and reliability, working with the factory from concept and prototyping through production. The engineer will mentor junior engineers, advance product design, and collaborate with global teams. The position focuses on new mechanical and electrical product designs, cost optimization, design enhancements, customer-informed development, and product validation. It evaluates technical feasibility and cost-effectiveness, and ensures performance and compliance with applicable standards. The role is onsite and includes travel of up to 10% domestically and internationally. Candidates must already have US work authorization permitting employment with ABB.

Requirements

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering; Mechanical or Electrical preferred.
Minimum 5 years of R&D experience in the electrical power equipment or a similar industry.
Experience in mechanical design of Low or Medium Voltage ANSI switchgear, Motor Control Centers, or similar complex electrical/mechanical equipment.
Knowledge and application of relevant industry standards, including ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, and UL.
Direct experience executing type tests at internal and external laboratories.
Candidates must already have work authorization permitting them to work for ABB in the United States.

Nice To Haves

Working knowledge of dielectric, thermal, or structural simulation software.
Proficiency in 3D CAD and PLM tools; SolidWorks or Creo with Windchill preferred.

Responsibilities

Lead development of new mechanical and electrical product designs, cost-optimization initiatives, and design enhancements aligned with company strategic objectives.
Collaborate with Product Managers, Project Managers, and R&D Engineers throughout the product development life cycle.
Integrate customer feedback into design solutions.
Validate product robustness using simulations, analytical methods, and physical testing.
Organize and conduct design reviews, assessing concepts for technical feasibility and cost-effectiveness.
Review and assess test plans and results to ensure product performance and compliance with ANSI/IEEE and CSA standards.
Work with the factory to drive projects from concept through prototyping to production.
Mentor junior engineers and collaborate with global teams.
