About The Position

VIAVI is hiring an R&D Networking QA Engineer to design, configure, and maintain a network lab infrastructure for product quality assurance testing. The role works with the R&D team in the Morrisville, North Carolina office and VIAVI colleagues worldwide. The engineer builds test environments that emulate customer networks, develops automation to verify network configurations and product features, and supports software development teams in designing and diagnosing network performance criteria for systems deployed or emulated in the lab. The position supports the full product development lifecycle, including lab maintenance, expansion planning, and technology updates.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree, or an Associate of Applied Science degree with equivalent hands-on work experience.
• At least 3 years of experience building, configuring, and troubleshooting switched and routed Ethernet networks in a lab, test, or production environment.
• Experience with switched and routed networks, including configuring Cisco switches and routers through CLI and scripting.
• Solid understanding of IP routing, BGP, OSPF, static routes, and core network services such as DHCP and DNS.
• Knowledge of network diagnostics, including packet analysis and monitoring tools.
• Ability to rack and stack network equipment, test instruments, and compute systems.
• Experience with programming languages for automation, such as Python, and automation test frameworks.
• Experience with agentic code generation and maintenance.

Nice To Haves

• Relevant certifications, such as CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent.
• Familiarity with Ethernet test equipment, including traffic generators and analyzers, and industry test methodologies such as RFC 2544 and Y.1564.
• Experience using Atlassian project management tools, including Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, and Bamboo, and Git repositories.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines for delivery of test automation.
• Experience with virtual server infrastructure, including VMware, OpenStack, or Proxmox.
• Experience with containerization, including Docker or Kubernetes, for scalable test infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Design, configure, and maintain an R&D network lab infrastructure for product quality assurance testing.
• Build network test environments in coordination with application development and product management teams to emulate customer networks and support quality assurance processes.
• Write automation test code to verify network configurations and support quality assurance for product features.
• Assist software development teams with the design and diagnosis of network performance criteria for systems deployed and emulated in the lab.
• Support the full product development lifecycle, including system maintenance, expansion planning, and technology updates.
• Rack and stack network equipment, test instruments, and compute systems.
