About The Position

Stoughton Trailers, LLC is seeking an R&D Engineer to design and develop new transportation equipment and continuously improve existing products. This role is crucial for ensuring the structural integrity and regulatory compliance of all company products. The engineer will assess the feasibility of designs, considering factors such as cost, market requirements, time limitations, planning, existing manufacturing processes, and other technical and economic aspects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar Engineering field
  • 1-5 years’ experience
  • Training in finite element analysis (FEA)
  • Experience designing welded, bolted, riveted, and bonded fabricated assemblies.
  • Knowledge of material science for steel, aluminum, composite
  • Strong verbal and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of thermal insulating structures is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and establish product specifications, performance requirements, and data to determine proposal feasibility.
  • Develop functional designs, in conjunction with a support team of engineers, that meet performance, dimensional, and other requirements for new products or improvements to existing ones.
  • Create drawings and supporting information to convey design intent to customers.
  • Oversee the creation of Bills of Material (BOM) for prototypes, base model products, and custom units.
  • Prepare or direct the preparation of layout and detailed drawings.
  • Provide information from drawings and vendor-supplied components for BOM definition.
  • Understand and apply Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and strength of materials to ensure structural integrity.
  • Apply general mechanical engineering analysis techniques to determine the cause of field failures.
  • Produce calculations for product weights and load distributions.
  • Plan and develop experimental test programs, including test requests, procedures, and fixture development.
  • Oversee the performance of tests and analyze test data to ensure design meets specifications.
  • Evaluate engineering test results to clarify or resolve problems and prepare design modifications.
  • Direct or coordinate the building of prototype systems or products.
  • Work with Manufacturing and Manufacturing Engineering to establish or improve manufacturing processes and procedures.
  • Ensure products are manufactured according to plan and assist in preventing or eliminating defects.
  • Generate materials lists for estimating purposes.
  • Provide technical information to sales and marketing for sales force training.
  • Work with vendors to evaluate and select components and inspect the quality of supplied components.
  • Contribute to team efforts to produce a quality product.
  • Attend scheduled work hours on a regular and timely basis.
  • Maintain good attendance.

  • Work and communicate in a team environment.
