R&D Assembly Technician

Skild AI•San Mateo, CA
•$70,000 - $150,000

About The Position

Skild AI is seeking an R&D Assembly Technician to join its hardware team and help build and bring up early prototype units. The role works closely with mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineers to assemble, wire, and calibrate new systems, then share firsthand build experience to inform design improvements. The company is developing general-purpose robotic intelligence intended to adapt to unseen scenarios, and its team includes people with varied backgrounds and experience levels. The position is suited to someone with hands-on electromechanical assembly experience who is comfortable working in a fast-moving R&D environment with ambiguity and incomplete documentation. A degree is not required. The base salary range is $70,000–$150,000 USD.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on assembly experience with complex electromechanical hardware, such as robotics, EVs, aerospace, medical devices, or similar; no degree is required.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and incomplete documentation in a fast-moving R&D environment.
  • Generalist skills in torque and fastening, wiring and harnessing, soldering, reading CAD and GD&T, and basic electrical troubleshooting.
  • Curiosity about how things go together and communication skills to provide engineers with actionable feedback.

Responsibilities

  • Build, assemble, and calibrate prototype and early-production units, including mechanical assembly, wiring and harnessing, fastening, and subsystem integration.
  • Identify assembly issues and fit problems, and provide design-for-assembly and design-for-manufacturing feedback for subsequent design revisions.
  • Develop and refine assembly work instructions (SWIs) as processes are established.
  • Troubleshoot build issues with the engineering team and contribute to real-time problem solving.
  • Optionally take on bill of materials and build-system work, including OpenBOM and version control, based on interest.
