About The Position

As a Quantum Machine Learning Research Scientist, you will play a key individual contributor role within CIBC’s Advanced Analytics and AI team, driving the development and application of quantum computing capabilities across the bank. You will lead applied research initiatives focused on designing, executing, and evaluating quantum algorithms, working closely with researchers, engineers, and business stakeholders to explore real-world use cases in areas such as fraud, cybersecurity, and optimization. You will contribute to advancing quantum research while translating complex concepts into practical insights, helping shape how emerging technologies can be leveraged within a banking environment. This role requires a strong balance of technical depth, hands-on experimentation, and the ability to communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences. At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. Details on your work arrangement (proportion of on-site and remote work) will be discussed at the time of your interview.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience in quantum computing.
  • Strong expertise in quantum computing concepts, algorithms, and programming frameworks, with hands-on experience in designing and executing experiments.
  • Experience translating theoretical research into practical experimentation or real-world applications, ideally within industry or applied research settings.
  • Proficient in programming and comfortable working with tools and frameworks such as Python, Qiskit, Cirq, Ocean, or Q#, and can collaborate effectively with engineering teams to execute experiments.
  • Understand machine learning concepts and have a working knowledge of machine learning principles and can articulate how they intersect with quantum computing.
  • A PhD in physics, computer science, mathematics, or a related field, with a focus on quantum computing or closely related disciplines.
  • Able to translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise insights for non-technical stakeholders, including senior leaders.
  • Motivated by collective success.
  • Love to learn.
  • Thrive in a research-driven environment, are open to learning across domains, and are motivated to explore how emerging technologies can create business value.
  • Bring your real self to work and live our values - trust, teamwork, and accountability.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and execute quantum computing experiments and proof-of-concepts, translating theoretical research into practical, testable outcomes aligned to business needs.
  • Apply deep knowledge of quantum computing principles and algorithms to solve complex computational problems, with a focus on real-world applicability within financial services.
  • Work closely with AI researchers, machine learning engineers, developers, and domain experts across business units (e.g., fraud, cybersecurity) to co-develop and evaluate innovative solutions.
  • Clearly articulate complex quantum concepts and research findings to a broad audience, including senior leadership, enabling informed decision-making.
  • Stay current with advancements in quantum computing and contribute to original research while identifying opportunities to apply emerging capabilities within the organization.
