About The Position

The Quantum Ion Trap Photonics Integration (PMTS) role is a senior technical leadership position within the GF Labs / Technology Development organization. It reports into the Quantum Ion Trap Lead Integrator. This role is responsible for defining and driving the integration of photonic components and optical interfaces required for scalable ion-trap-based quantum computing platforms. The position bridges advanced photonic device concepts with semiconductor process, integration, and packaging realities to enable manufacturable and scalable quantum hardware.

Requirements

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, Materials Science, or related field
  • 12+ years in semiconductor, photonics, or related advanced device integration fields

Nice To Haves

  • Deep expertise in photonic device integration, including optical waveguides, gratings, couplers, modulators, and optical interfaces
  • Experience with optical characterization of photonic components and integrated photonic circuits, including development of high-sensitivity measurement techniques
  • Familiarity with photonics modeling and simulation approaches for PIC design and process-variation sensitivity analysis
  • Experience supporting externally funded programs or joint development efforts with government, academic, or industrial partners.

Responsibilities

  • Define and lead photonics integration strategies for ion-trap quantum computing platforms, including optical waveguides, gratings, couplers, modulators, and optical interfaces.
  • Architect integration approaches that combine photonic structures with ion trap devices, BEOL integration, and advanced packaging technologies to meet system-level requirements.
  • Drive development and optimization of optical performance, including coupling efficiency, insertion loss, alignment tolerances, variability, and cross-talk.
  • Define and execute experiments, simulations, and characterization plans to improve photonic device performance, yield, and reliability.
  • Lead yield-learning and integration debug efforts, including root-cause analysis of photonic and process integration challenges.
  • Translate quantum system requirements into manufacturable photonics design rules, process requirements, and test/characterization methodologies.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment with photonics design, process integration, device engineering, packaging, reliability, and manufacturing teams to ensure successful system integration and performance validation.
  • Define and track technical milestones, including performance, variability, yield, and reliability metrics.
  • Serve as a senior technical interface with internal leadership, customers, and external partners, including academic institutions and government programs.
  • Mentor engineers and establish best practices in photonics integration, ensuring technical rigor, scalability, and repeatability across the organization.
