Quantitative Developer

About The Position

MSCI is seeking a Quantitative Developer to join their team. This role focuses on implementing performance measurement systems for private markets, ensuring accuracy and audibility. The developer will create deterministic recipes for performance calculations based on ledger flows, with a strict tolerance for methodological drift. Key responsibilities include implementing various return methodologies (TWR, Modified Dietz, IRR), NAV roll-forwards, benchmark-relative returns, and gross/net computations. The role also involves defining and validating timing conventions and flow-classification rules, and writing reference test cases for agent-generated implementations. This position requires a strong numerical background and experience in building performance measurement systems within asset management or fund administration.

Requirements

  • 5+ years building performance measurement systems in asset management, fund administration, or a GIPS-adjacent environment.
  • Strong numerical methods background, including comfort reasoning about floating-point tolerance and where it matters versus where it doesn't.
  • Production experience in a modern, type-safe language (Go, Kotlin, Scala, or similar) or Python for financial calculation engines.
  • Ability to explain, precisely, the difference between TWR and IRR and when each one lies to you.
  • Direct GIPS compliance or verification experience.
  • Private markets performance experience specifically (as opposed to public markets only).

Responsibilities

  • Implement return methodologies: TWR, Modified Dietz, and money-weighted (IRR) returns as pure, auditable functions over conserved cash flows.
  • Develop NAV roll-forward: period-over-period NAV decomposition that reconciles exactly to the underlying flows and marks, with no plug or balancing entry.
  • Compute benchmark-relative returns: including proxy-filled returns for periods or assets where a direct benchmark doesn't exist.
  • Perform gross/net computation: ensure correct fee and carry leg selection so gross-to-net bridges are always explainable.
  • Define and validate timing conventions and flow-classification rules, ensuring value-neutrality.
  • Write reference test cases (including deliberately adversarial timing edge cases) that any agent-generated implementation must reproduce exactly before it ships.

Benefits

  • Salary range: $133,000 - $173,000 / year.
  • Eligible for annual bonus.
  • Transparent compensation schemes.
  • Comprehensive employee benefits, tailored to your location.
