About The Position

This position ensures that quality of manufactured or purchased products conforms to customer specifications, Valmont specifications and nationally recognized standards. The position seeks to improve product quality through working with production personnel and manufacturing quality processes. Duties also include training of personnel in inspection. The incumbent is required to assist with implementing inspection best practices across Valmont’s North American Infrastructure footprint. They interface with manufacturing and engineering on design problems. It is extremely important that the incumbent use a diplomatic approach in dealing with others and sells quality as something that is easier and less expensive than poor workmanship, which could result in lost markets, expensive rework, and/or costly product liability. The incumbent should promote and sell an attitude that quality is economical and will insure the future of the company. The incumbent may also be requested to train employees new to the Quality Assurance Department.

Requirements

  • Preferred Bachelors with 3+ years of relevant experience or Associate’s degree with 5+ years of relevant experience or -7 years of relevant experience
  • Five years of previous experience in a welding or inspection environment
  • AWS CWI Certified
  • Applicable AMPP Coatings Certification
  • Applicable NDT Certifications
  • Continuous improvement mindset
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Be able to read and interpret production drawings, specifications, and codes
  • Must be knowledgeable in welding fabrication processes
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
  • Familiar with the E-mail system and have a practical understanding of basic Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to perform mathematic calculations, including trigonometry and intermediate algebra
  • Ability to use dimensional measuring tools
  • Ability to operate basic and advanced NDT testing equipment
  • Ability to work effectively with plant employees, supervisors, management, and customers
  • Ability to prioritize work to complete deadlines
  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results
  • Visual inspection of welds requires adequate eyesight as defined by the Certified Weld Inspector certification.
  • Walking on concrete floor all day is required.
  • General lifting requirements is 35 pounds with rare instances greater than this amount without the assistance of material handling devices.
  • Operator must stand and walk, as well as handle parts, tools, and equipment, gripping and grasping, on a frequent to constant basis.
  • On an occasional to frequent basis, operator is required to lift/carry parts. Although a few items do weigh more, a maximum lift of 50 lb. is all that is required.
  • Standing, bending, pivoting, walking, and reaching overhead are required during most of the shift.
  • The functions of this job require the employee to be always alert.
  • Working in a fast-paced environment as well as the repetitious nature of this job requires both mental and visual concentration.
  • The technician must be able to work quickly to repair plant equipment so operations can resume.
  • There are often high stress situations where the technician needs to be able to work under adverse conditions for long periods of time using intense mental and visual concentration.
  • Good hand to eye coordination with a good sense of depth perception is required at all time.
  • Technicians need to be able to distinguish colors and be capable of reading manuals, schematics, labels, and other printed materials.
  • Adequate hearing is required to diagnose problems with machines and equipment.
  • Mental and visual concentration is needed to prevent injury to oneself, fellow workers and/or damage to the product.
  • The use of any equipment or tools requires the employee to be always alert.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree or Certificate in Non-Destructive Testing
  • Seven years of previous experience in a welding or inspection environment
  • Occasional climbing onto poles for inspection.
  • Some operations may expose employee to some type of disagreeable working conditions (wind, cold, heat, dust, dirt, fumes, noise, vibration, water, or oil).
  • Some areas of the plant can be a noisy at times with sound levels reaching above 85 decibels.
  • The employee will operate machines that use liquid coolant and may also be exposed to cast iron dust.
  • Some outdoor work is required which includes work in conditions with abnormal temperatures.
  • Employee works around material stacked overhead height.
  • Conditions range from clean work to exposure to odors, fumes, drafts, wet conditions, dirt, grease, smoke, dust, noise, high temperatures and low frigid temperatures.
  • Works in disagreeable weather conditions nearly 30% of the year.
  • Approximately 20% of the time in an office environment.

  • This job requires handling metal objects some of which with sharp edges.
  • There is a risk of cuts, scraps, and abrasions to the hand as well as danger of chemical burns, high voltage shocks or burns.
  • Some employee may find allergies or minor skin irritations to solvents or coolants used around the area in which they work.
  • This job has exposure to other occupational health and accident hazards such as eye injury from dust and dirt.
  • There is occasional pivoting, walking, bending, and lifting during the work shift.
  • For the most part, the accident hazard level is low to moderate, and any probable injury may come from working with sharp metal edges or from performing improper lifting or moving of equipment without exercising reasonable care and observing safety regulations.
  • Occasional exposure to tripping or slipping is present and employees must use caution when working around ice, snow, and wet surfaces.
  • Occasional climbing onto poles for inspection.
  • Climbing ladders, pulling wire through conduit, hanging fixtures and electrical components also requires a physical exertion.
  • Lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, stretching, crawling, and working in awkward and/or confined positions is frequent with any electromechanical technician.
  • Some of the physical tasks include hanging gearboxes on top of machines, changing brakes or the motors on cranes.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspection training in accordance with Valmont’s training program.
  • Coach and mentor inspection personnel while promoting a continuous improvement environment
  • Deliver inspection training results and identify areas of training improvement
  • Interpret codes and standards applicable to manufactured product
  • Support instrument calibration – division wide process
  • Perform scheduled performance audits of certified NDT personnel and Valmont facilities
  • Identify quality inspection-based corrective actions and perform root cause analysis accordingly
  • Administer routine quality training
  • Participate and assist in capital and budget planning
  • Establish and implement inspection best practices among Valmont Infrastructure facilities located in North America
  • Develop and implement improved and/or advanced inspection techniques
  • Assist in the review and/or creation of inspection procedures
  • Review and offer feedback on proposed changes to Valmont inspection procedures
  • Assist in inspection refresher training at any of the Valmont Infrastructure facilities located in North America
  • Maintain a company credit card
