Quality & Reliability Engineer II

Microsoft•Redmond, WA

About The Position

Microsoft’s Devices Reliability team is seeking an engineer with expertise in mechanical, reliability, materials, or a related engineering field to develop and implement methods for evaluating and improving component and product reliability. The role may support multiple products and cross-functional teams, partnering with hardware engineers, product designers, software engineers, suppliers, and manufacturing partners to help deliver reliable devices. The engineer contributes to reliability analysis, specifications, qualification plans, testing, failure analysis, and production monitoring, generally with guidance from other engineers. The position also involves coordinating outsourced testing, documenting materials and qualification-plan changes, tracking reliability metrics, analyzing test data, and communicating project status. Work must follow applicable security protocols, including requirements for handling test data and assessing secure manufacturing practices.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field and 2+ years of technical engineering experience; or bachelor’s degree in one of those fields or a related field and 3+ years of technical engineering experience; or 7+ years of technical engineering experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with Design for Reliability (DfR), including upfront modeling, materials and process characterization, and other risk-analysis methods.
  • Gather information to help determine whether to conduct design reliability risk analysis, develop test infrastructure, or execute testing internally or externally, including analysis scope and resource needs.
  • Develop knowledge of industry trends, competitor products, and technical advances related to hardware reliability engineering.
  • Gather data to help develop reliability specifications for product features based on customer usage models, requirements, failure risks, and reliability risk assessments.
  • Assist in creating analyses, test techniques, and design, materials, or process solutions to reliability challenges, including novel or potentially patentable solutions.
  • Contribute to qualification plans for product features based on Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA).
  • Coordinate existing outsourced testing plans and processes.
  • Assist in planning ongoing reliability tests and tracking Critical to Reliability (CtR) metrics so mass-produced devices continue to meet the reliability level qualified at launch.
  • Assist with implementing and tracking product qualification plans.
  • Communicate project progress and status to project team customers and partners, and escalate issues as necessary.
  • Support monitoring and auditing supplier factory operations to help ensure high-quality manufacturing, as appropriate.
  • Assist with integrating risks such as supplier or partner delays, incomplete specifications, security concerns, or tool issues into qualification plans.
  • Document reliability-relevant details about materials, components, and assemblies, and accurately record and track qualification-plan changes.
  • Control standard test data in accordance with security protocols for identified content.
  • Record test data and conduct basic data and statistical analysis to identify bugs, defects, or failure rates.
  • Interpret analysis results to identify common problems or flaws that may affect a feature or product design change, and bring them to the attention of other engineers or team leads.
  • Perform or help determine appropriate failure analyses to identify reported issues within a product feature subsystem, as directed.
  • Evaluate production materials, properties, and techniques, and consider secure manufacturing practices.
  • Assist in determining and implementing appropriate reliability test equipment, fixtures, and procedures for existing qualification plans in accordance with security protocols.
  • Assist in verifying corrective and preventive actions to ensure they address known problems for a product feature.
