About The Position

Under the supervision of the Production Supervisor, the Quality Operator is responsible for ensuring product quality at the Powder Coating Line through the use of regular consistent checks via equipment and visual checks. This role involves operating quality check equipment, making running decisions to prevent defects and downtime, keeping accurate records, and communicating issues effectively. The Quality Operator must also adhere to all safety and environmental policies, maintain a clean work area, and contribute to cost reduction efforts.

Requirements

  • Basic computer skills including Excel, & web-based applications to enter data regularly and accurately.
  • Ability to learn and understand the PLC operating screen and data output screens.
  • Understand your internal customer base (Sublimation Line, Assembly, and Crating).
  • Be customer oriented; possess the ability to react to the customers’ needs while following company procedures.
  • Must be flexible and be able to respond with a positive attitude to changing demands and conditions.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with many areas of the plant/company during meetings, presentations, and various conversations on and off the floor.
  • Attention to detail and understand/adjusting to minor detail changes.
  • Ability to learn how to operate a forklift and other company vehicles.
  • Regularly required to talk and/or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Frequently lift and move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 75 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • High school diploma or GED required.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior manufacturing, assembly, material movement, or powder coating operations experience preferred.
  • Direct knowledge and demonstrated understanding of Johnstown plant products and processes is preferred.
  • Knowledge of metal manufacturing materials, fabrication processes, and machinery preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Commit to and follow the facility Mission, Vision and Values that support the AWI Operating Principles as an individual and team.
  • Attend and participate in all required company training programs.
  • Operate all quality check equipment including but not limited to: colorimeter, gloss meter, viewing board, thickness gauge, scratch testing, etc.
  • Operate machinery or stations as instructed by the Supervisor to meet scheduled demands.
  • Support the development of standard recipes with the operators on the line.
  • Make appropriate running decisions to prevent excessive defects and/or downtime.
  • Develop a knowledge of the basics of operation of each area in order to communicate issues and support troubleshooting.
  • Keep accurate records of production, waste, and quality checks undertaken.
  • Communicate issues quickly and accurately to the operators, supervisor, and plant resources to prevent excessive scrap and downtime.
  • Follow all Company, OSHA Safety, and EPA Environmental Policies.
  • Ensure personal safe behavior and encourages safe behavior in others.
  • Participate in safety related events/trainings/processes.
  • Conform to all company policies and procedures.
  • Maintain clean and organized work area.
  • Proper cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
  • Report any safety/environmental incidents.
  • Maintain a high level of customer focus in producing quality products and services that do not sacrifice the safety of others, oneself, nor the environment.
  • Ensure that the standards for quality, output, safety etc. are adhered to and improved upon.
  • Troubleshoot issues that are within your knowledge and control.
  • Decide quickly to contact more resources for issues outside of your knowledge and control.
  • Effective use and management of standards and samples.
  • Check coating quality using visual checks and quality devices at a regular interval.
  • Support the product hold process when material is out of specification by working with the quality team to determine isolation time frames.
  • Monitor aspects of the booth that could affect the product quality using devices, standard work, and knowledge of the process.
  • Understand when a powder is of standard quality or of good quality vs when there is an issue that needs to be addressed.
  • Create and/or improve upon standard work processes including but not limited to: Start Up, Shut Down, While Running, Change Overs, Troubleshooting, Downday Cost.
  • Looks for projects or methods to reduce cost without sacrificing the quality of the parts.
  • Drive waste out of operation.
