About The Position

The Department of Pathology is seeking a Quality and Operations Improvement Engineer to design, organize and coordinate informatics and quality system program activities for the Molecular Pathology and Flow Cytometry laboratories and faculty. Leads the evaluation and implementation of quality assurance programs and ensures compliance with organizational policies and regulatory and accrediting agencies. This position is 100%25 time, Monday – Friday, 1st shift.
The Department of Pathology is part of UI Health Care, a comprehensive health sciences center that serves Iowa and the region, as well as patients referred from the United States and overseas. The Clinical Laboratories are well recognized for providing outstanding and comprehensive care to the patients we serve. The breadth and depth of services provided are amongst the best in the country. The educational programs that the department participates in includes medical students, clinical laboratory scientists as well as biomedical scientists.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
• 1-3 years clinical laboratory experience.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with effective leadership skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, to meet deadlines efficiently, to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and to be highly self-motivated is required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

• Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or a categorical/specialist certification in a laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent.
• 1-3 years quality program experience.
• Knowledge of the regulations and accrediting standards of the following agencies: CMS, Joint Commission and/or CAP.
• Demonstrated ability to perform statistical and trend analysis.
• Knowledge of Centers for Medicare, and Medicaid Services (CMS) compliance program initiatives.
• Molecular Pathology or Flow Cytometry laboratory experience.
• Experience working in an academic health center.

Responsibilities

• Development, implementation and operational oversight of quality programs in Molecular Pathology and Flow Cytometry.
• Provide operational oversight to ensure compliance with regulatory, accrediting agencies and organizational policies.
• Serve as liaison to UI Health Care departments, vendors, faculty, and staff for interpretation of quality policies, procedures and programs
• Coordinates employee training and continuing education, validation testing, implementation, and maintenance of all equipment within Molecular Pathology and Flow Cytometry.
• Assists lead scientists by performing additional activities when needed to ensure smooth functioning of the laboratory.
