About The Position

USG is seeking a Quality Lab Operator to join their team. This role involves performing accurate product testing according to departmental procedures, recognizing and reporting adverse trends or product performance issues, and conducting quality checks. The operator will also be responsible for equipment changeovers, recording production numbers, performing routine maintenance, and adhering to all safety and housekeeping standards. Participation in workplace organization, 5S initiatives, and continuous improvement projects is expected. The position requires the ability to work safely in a manufacturing setting, maintain high housekeeping standards, and possess computer skills for data entry and reporting using Microsoft Office programs. The operator must be able to recognize measurements outside specified ranges, read various measuring devices, and complete documented inspection procedures. Basic math and science skills, the ability to learn lab equipment operation, familiarity with common hand tools, and troubleshooting skills are necessary. Good communication skills and the ability to cooperate with co-workers on safety, quality, and production/maintenance are essential. The role also involves using on-line tools to monitor product specifications and making machine/process adjustments as needed.

Requirements

  • Able to work in a manufacturing setting in a safe manner and follow all plant safety rules and practices.
  • Maintain a high standard for housekeeping within the work area.
  • Computer skills needed for data entry, reporting, review and/or revise documents in Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Recognize measurements that are outside of a specified range.
  • Read measuring devices - standard tape measure down to 1/32" and a micrometer down to 0.001".
  • Read and complete documented inspection procedures.
  • Must be able to read, write and possess basic math and science skills.
  • Ability to learn to operate Lab equipment.
  • Familiar with common hand tools and how to properly use them. (Hammer, wrench, screwdrivers, pliers, putty knife, etc.)
  • Ability to troubleshoot minor issues within a process.
  • Good communication skills needed with all co-workers.
  • Recognize unsafe conditions or hazards within work area.
  • Demonstrates the ability to cooperate with co-workers in areas of safety, quality, production/maintenance, and understands importance of completing assigned tasks and their relationship to other requirements.
  • Able to learn procedures and retain information for continuous use.
  • Ability to use on-line tools to monitor product specifications to ensure product compliance.
  • Ability to make machine and process adjustments to ensure product is within required specifications.
  • Must be available for overtime and call-ins as required.

Nice To Haves

  • A self-motivated individual with an ability to work independently with minimal supervision is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform accurate product testing as outlined in the department procedural manuals.
  • Recognize and react to adverse trends, off spec material, or poor product performance characteristics on manufactured products and report to supervision.
  • Perform quality checks and record results.
  • Change settings on equipment during changeovers.
  • Properly record all production numbers in the required format.
  • Perform some routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Know and follow all plant, department, and job safety rules.
  • Maintain an acceptable level of housekeeping in the shop and after completing assigned jobs.
  • Wear and use all required PPE (hard hat, steel toe shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs, etc).
  • Participate in workplace organization and 5S Initiatives.
  • Support and/or participate on continuous improvement projects.
