Quality Engineering Intern

Combined Metals Company, LLCHampshire, IL
Onsite

About The Position

Combined Metals is a premier North American processor and distributor of specialty strip and wire, built through 50 years of growth and acquisition. As the largest independent processor and distributor of specialty strip and wire in North America, Combined Metals supports over 3,000 customers across various industries including Aerospace, Defense, Nuclear, Medical, Petrochemical, Oil & Gas, Electrification, Automotive, and Consumer. Our Elgin manufacturing site produces a wide range of Steel, Titanium, Nickel, and Cobalt metal alloys for critical applications in Aerospace, Nuclear, Oil & Gas, and medical devices. These high-performance alloys are designed for extreme environments, such as high-temperature jet engine turbine components or corrosive components in Gas & Oil applications. To achieve the correct final metal properties, our manufacturing team adheres to specific parameters (process routes) during cold rolling and heat treatment. With over 50 different alloys and hundreds of specific process routes, maintaining and developing new routes is time-consuming and prone to errors, often requiring the creation of a new processing recipe for almost every new order. To be successful in this role, the candidate will need to gain knowledge in metal manufacturing processes such as cold rolling, heat treatment, and slitting, as well as support areas like quality, production control, and scheduling. The intern will have access to the manufacturing floor to observe equipment and operations firsthand.

Requirements

  • Gain knowledge in metal manufacturing (cold rolling, heat treatment, slitting).
  • Gain knowledge in support areas such as quality, production control, and scheduling.
  • Access to manufacturing floor to see equipment and operations firsthand.

Responsibilities

  • Develop reports and monitoring tools to provide Quality and Production teams with real-time status of manufacturing processes.
  • Make data collected from machines more accessible and visible to Quality and Production teams.
  • Create reports to enable effective real-time process monitoring and root cause investigation of identified problems.
  • Coordinate and oversee the evaluation of critical measuring methods, including calipers, micrometers, tensile machines, and hardness testers.
  • Assist in training the AI-powered inspection vision system to detect and identify surface defects such as scratches, dents, and contamination.
  • Fine-tune parameters for the effective identification of defects using the inspection vision system.
